A thermoplastic composition including a resin phase and 10% to 55%, especially 25% to 45% of glass fibers by weight of the composition is disclosed. The resin phase includes a polysiloxane block copolymer including polydimethylsiloxane blocks and polycarbonate blocks derived from bisphenol A. The resin phase further includes a polycarbonate and has between 2.0 wt % and 10 wt % by weight of siloxane. The thermoplastic composition has (i) a notched Izod impact strength of at least 150 Joules per meter measured at 23&#xb0; C. according to ASTM D256, (ii) a tensile strength greater than 95 MPa as determined by ASTM D638, (iii) a tensile modulus greater than 10,900 MPa as determined by ASTM D638 and (iv) an unnotched Izod impact strength greater than 775 Joules per meter measured at 23&#xb0; C. according to ASTM D256.

Disclosed is a thermoplastic composition comprising a polycarbonate terpolymer comprising structures derived from structures (I), (II) and (III), wherein (I) is a dihydroxy compound having the structure (A): wherein n is 0 to 4 and Ris independently a halogen atom, a Chydrocarbon group, or a Chalogen substituted hydrocarbon group; (II) comprises a second dihydroxy compound derived from Formula (A) and different from (I) and wherein n and Rare as previously defined; and (III) a third dihydroxy compound not derived from Formula (A), wherein the sum of the mol percent of all of structures (I) and (II) is greater than 45% relative to the sum of the molar amounts of all of structures (I), (II) and (III) in the polycarbonate terpolymer and wherein said polycarbonate terpolymer is amorphous; an impact modifier; an ungrafted rigid copolymer; and a flame retardant. The thermoplastic composition has improved chemical resistance and flame retardance.

A method of preparing a polycarbonate nanocomposite comprising forming a reactant mixture comprising a nanomaterial, a solvent, a dihydroxy compound and an activated carbonate; and polymerizing the dihydroxy compound and the activated carbonate in the presence of the solvent to form the polycarbonate nanocomposite is disclosed. Also disclosed are polycarbonate nanocomposites prepared in accordance with this method, and thermoplastic compositions comprising the polycarbonate nanocomposites. Also disclosed are polycarbonate compositions comprising the nanomaterial.

The present invention provides methods for controlling the optical properties of a light transmissive article. The method includes identifying a target window in an Abbe diagram comprising reference polymeric materials. The method further includes selecting a first polymeric material from the reference polymeric materials and compounding the first polymeric material with a stable UV chromophore to provide a first polymer composition. The method further includes transforming the first polymer composition to provide the light transmissive article, wherein the light transmissive article has an Abbe number and a refractive index which falls within the target window. Light transmissive articles prepared using the above methods are also provided.

An optical grade article comprises a thermoplastic composition comprising a poly(aliphatic ester)-polycarbonate copolymer comprising 10 to 25 wt % of a soft block ester unit derived from a Caliphatic dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof, 34 to 77 wt % of a carbonate unit derived from 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine, 0 to 76 wt % of a carbonate unit derived from a dihydroxyaromatic compound not identical to the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine, wherein the weight percentages of soft block ester units, 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine units, and dihydroxyaromatic compound units is 100 weight percent of the monomeric units of the poly(aliphatic ester)-polycarbonate, the refractive index of the thermoplastic composition is greater than 1.590, and the glass transition temperature of the poly(aliphatic ester)-polycarbonate is from 120 to 155&#xb0; C. A camera lens also comprises the poly(aliphatic ester)-polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate-polyester blends, methods of manufacture, and methods of use

A method of making polycarbonate includes the steps of forming polycarbonate by a melt transesterification method using an activated diaryl carbonate, and compounding the polycarbonate with a phosphorus-containing compound that has an abstractable proton or hydrolyzable group. The phosphorus-containing compound is compounded with the polycarbonate in an amount sufficient to result in an improvement in the color properties of the polycarbonate as compared to pellets formed from the same polycarbonate without addition of the phosphorus-containing compound.
