Location information from a receiver in a wireless network

Base stations for MIMO wireless systems embodying efficient channel estimation techniques. One illustrative embodiment includes: an array of multiple antennas to exchange uplink and downlink signals with spatially-distributed user terminals; multiple transmit chains, each coupled to one of the multiple antennas by a respective transceiver that also couples that antenna to a respective one of multiple receive chains; and a controller. Each of the receive chains opportunistically derives estimated uplink channel response coefficients from packet headers in the wireless uplink signals, and the controller determines a steering transform based at least in part on the estimated channel response coefficients. The transmit chains apply the steering transform to spatially-distinct downlink signals to produce antenna-specific downlink signals for each antenna in the array. Another illustrative embodiment determines, based at least in part on the estimated channel response coefficients, a mobility indicator for each user terminal, and, based on the mobility indicators, schedules at least one action.

Efficient channel estimation for implicit MU-MIMO

A client device includes a processor and an antenna. The client device obtains an announcement that specifies a winning client of a channel contention competition; identifies a group association of the client device using an identity of the winning client; transmits a preamble modulated by an entry of a preamble interference nullification matrix, the entry is based on the group association; and transmits, after transmitting the preamble, a data transmission. The preamble is transmitted at the same time as a second preamble is transmitted by a second client device.

Distributed and scalable physical layer and medium access design for uplink multiuser multiple-input, multiple-output (MU-MIMO) in wireless local area network (WLAN) systems

A method includes generating, by a wireless device, a sounding packet. The method includes sending, by the wireless device, copies of the sounding packet using a beam former and an antenna array to a second wireless device. Each copy of the copies of the sounding packet is sent using different beam weights. The method includes, in response to sending the copies of the sounding packet, obtaining, by the wireless device, a first correction beam weight and a second correction beam weight from the second wireless device and sending, by the wireless device, data to the second wireless device using the first correction beam weight and the second correction beam weight.

System and method to enable secondary transmission in the presence of an active primary transmission

A method for transmitting packets. The method includes making a first determination, using a first relevant sample set for a first client device, that the first client device does not need to be sounded and making a second determination, using a second relevant sample set for the second client device, that a second client device needs to be sounded. The method further includes, based on the first and second determination, performing a sounding operation for the second client device to obtain channel state information for the second client device and after performing the sounding operation for the second client device: wirelessly transmitting at least one packet to the first client device using historical channel state information for the first client device, and wirelessly transmitting at least one packet to the second client device using the channel state information.

Method and system for reducing sounding overhead in wireless communication

A method of wireless local area network communication between a client and an access point includes sending, by the client, a client-originated message to the access point over a bidirectional upload channel; receiving, by the client, a client-acknowledgement message from the access point over the bidirectional upload channel; receiving, by the client, an access point-originated message from the access point over a bidirectional download channel that was generated in response to the client-originated message; and sending, by the client, an access point-acknowledgement message to the access point over the bidirectional download channel. The bidirectional download channel is separate from the bidirectional upload channel.

Dual channel Wi-Fi for congested WLANs with asymmetric traffic loads

A system and method for simultaneous and asynchronous transmissions in multi-antenna multi-hop networks. The system and method employ randomized and non-greedy resource allocation to counter starvation. The system and method define a class of asynchronous random access protocols subsuming MIMO systems via two components. Residual Capacity Estimation and Randomized Resource Allocation. The system and method realize the first asynchronous MIMO MAC protocol that counters flow starvation in multi-hop networks. Randomized and non-greedy antenna allocation coupled with local residual capacity estimation results in previously-starving nodes capturing a fair share of system resources while simultaneously exploiting throughput gains available to multi-antenna systems.

System and method for randomized antenna allocation in asynchronous MIMO multi-hop networks

A method for transmitting data from a sender to a receiver over a channel. The method includes identifying the receiver, obtaining an initiation correlated symbol sequence (CSS) associated with the receiver, transmitting the initiation CSS, where the sender and the receiver are configured to communicate over the channel, where the channel is a frequency band in a radio-frequency spectrum. The method further includes receiving a first reservation CSS from the receiver signaling that the receiver has reserved the channel in order to receive the data from the sender. In response to receiving the first reservation CSS, transmitting the data to the receiver, and receiving an acknowledgment CSS from the receiver signaling that the receiver has received the data from the sender.

Method and system for wirelessly transmitting data

A method and apparatus for performing measurement-based admission control using peak rate envelopes is disclosed. A peak rate envelope estimator that uses empirical traffic envelopes of the aggregate traffic flow to allocate resources. Connection requests from the user are accepted or denied based upon the empirical traffic envelopes of the aggregate traffic flow.

Method and apparatus for performing measurement-based admission control using peak rate envelopes

A network element is deployed in a network of interconnected elements. The network element includes a shared buffer multiplexer connected to a link, a set of regulators connected to the shared buffer mulitplexer, and an admission control unit communicatively coupled to the set of regulators and the shared buffer multiplexer. Each of the set of regulators has an input traffic flow. Each traffic flow has a varying flow rate. In order to control admission of the traffic flow to the link in the network element, the admission control unit evaluates the traffic flowing into each regulator. For each traffic flow, the admission control unit receives an envelope of the flow input to the regulator. The admission control unit maximizes the entropy of a distribution of the rate of flow over all time scales. The admission control unit determines the maximum-entropy distribution for the flow using information derived from the traffic envelope, including bounds of the mean rate, the minimum rate, and the maximum rate. The admission control unit approximates the rate variance of the maximum-entropy distribution for a given maximum rate. The admission control unit makes an admission control decision based on the approximated rate variance for the given maximum rate. If the flow is admitted, the flow is set up and transmission begins.
