A system for adjusting physical properties of a ski or snowboard, through use of one or more specially shaped components applied upon or embedded within the ski or snowboard, wherein the components may be comprised of a thermally responsive material that includes nitinol, and wherein the nitinol components may themselves be treated using a specific method in order to achieve desired transformation results that adjust stiffness, rocker, and in some cases camber angle of a ski.

A system, method, and apparatus for an athlete to variably control the flexibility and stiffness parameters of a piece of athletic equipment to select a desired performance characteristic of the equipment based on the stiffness parameter. According to certain embodiments discussed herein, an item of sporting equipment may be embedded, impregnated, lined, or encased using nitinol components, wherein the nitinol components may themselves be treated using a specific method in order to achieve the desired transformation results, as described below.

The apparatus, systems and methods disclosed herein generally relate to the surgical repair or alteration of bone. More particularly, certain of the disclosed apparatus, systems and methods of the present disclosure relate to the use of a directionally-reinforced composite material to emulate anisotropic structural characteristics of an original anatomic trabecular structure. The directionally-reinforced composite material may generally include a scaffold set in a composite matrix, wherein the scaffold determines the anisotropic structural characteristics of the materials. In some of the embodiments, a scaffold may include at least a first plurality of struts which are generally aligned in a first direction and a second plurality of struts aligned in a second direction.

Post-operative infection in joint prostheses is a problem due to adverse consequences such as surgical debridement or implant removal. Embodiments create a coating that can be powered to release microbicidal agents to both ensure the prevention of infections, and avoid the development of antibiotic resistance. Silver ions have been well established for antimicrobial characteristics, and thus make an advantageous implant coating. Reverse electrolysis allows the ions to be released for a sustained period of time, and then collected back onto to the implant to avoid silver poisoning. A wireless reverse electrolysis system releases a sufficient amount of silver ions to break down biofilm surrounding a joint implant. By applying a modulated current waveform that has a net negative value to a conducting copper strip, the mirror current induced on the silver coating surface has a net positive flow, allowing ions to be released into surrounding tissue. Using this method, an average silver concentration of 32 ppb is created in surrounding medium after 12 hours, sufficient to eradicate bacteria directly around the silver. The ability to wirelessly induce electrolysis of silver ions to kill a significant quantity of bacteria can be used in surgical procedures to avoid post-operative infection in joint prostheses.
