An air spring for a vehicle suspension includes a resilient spring body that is partially surrounded by a protective cover. The protective cover protects the resilient spring body from rupturing when used in harsh vehicle conditions. The protective cover is comprised of a rigid or flexible armor material that is resistive to munitions, such as projectiles and razor wire, for example.

Air spring protector

An air spring assembly includes a pedestal that has one end fixed to a suspension arm and includes a second end with a platform that supports an air spring assembly. An air spring piston is fixed to the platform. A lower portion of a flexible bellows is fixed to the air spring piston and an upper portion of the flexible bellows is mounted to a vehicle frame structure. A linear moveable member has one end fixed to the upper portion of said flexible bellows and an opposite end slidingly received within an internal cavity of the pedestal such that the upper and lower portions of the flexible bellows articulate linearly with respect to each other.

Self-guided air spring assembly

An independent suspension includes upper and lower control arms that are coupled to a knuckle that supports a wheel assembly. A spring bracket is pivotally connected to the lower control arm. A drive shaft extends through an opening in the spring bracket to drive the wheel assembly. The spring bracket includes first and second support plates that respectively support first and second springs on opposite sides of the drive shaft. A torque rod is pivotally connected to the spring bracket. The torque rod and the upper and lower control arms are also mounted to a vehicle frame member. The torque rod, knuckle, spring bracket, upper and lower control arms, and vehicle structure cooperate to provide a six link control that accommodates large wheel jounce travel.

Six link independent suspension for a drive axle

A wheel end assembly includes an output shaft that is directly mountable to a wheel adapter to drive a vehicle wheel. A gear assembly is coupled to the output shaft to transfer driving force from an input to the output shaft. The gear assembly includes an output gear that is directly coupled to the output shaft. Thus, the wheel adapter and output gear are both supported directly on the output shaft. The gear assembly and output shaft are substantially enclosed within a housing that is mounted to a non-rotating vehicle component. The output shaft is solely supported by a pair of bearings for rotation relative to the housing. The bearings are installed for direct engagement with the output shaft and housing.

Vehicle wheel end assembly with wheel adapter

A torsion bar suspension assembly is provided that includes a control arm supported by a frame. The torsion bar extends along a longitudinal axis having a first end portion connected to the control arm and a second end portion engaging the frame. A contact arm is connected to the torsion bar and is arranged between the first and second end portions. The contact arm is spaced from the frame in a first position and engages the frame in a second position. A first spring rate is provided when the contact arm is spaced from the frame between the first and second positions. Once the contact arm engages the frame between second and third positions, a second spring rate is provided that is different from the first spring rate.

Multi-rate torsion bar independent suspension spring

A suspension system includes a swing arm which pivots about a pivot axis. A hub assembly, hub gear box and input gear box are mounted to an independently pivoting swing arm. The pivot axis is located closer to the ground than a rotational axis defined by the hub assemblies and the input gear box. A coupling extends from the input gear box to receive an input driveline from a drive source such as vehicle engine. The coupling is located proximate the pivot axis to minimize relative movement during articulation of the swing arm. An axle housing extends between the input gear box and an opposite hub gear box to support a drive shaft and serves as a torsion bar.

Semi-independent swing arm suspension system for a low floor vehicle

A drive axle assembly for a low floor vehicle utilizes a single input gear assembly to drive a pair of laterally spaced wheel ends. The input gear assembly is positioned next to one of the wheel ends so that the vehicle floor can be lowered to facilitate passenger access to the vehicle. Each wheel end includes a gear reduction assembly with a ring gear rotatably mounted within a gear housing. A drive gear is operatively coupled to the input gear assembly and is in meshing engagement with the ring gear. The gear reduction assembly also includes an output or driven gear, which is larger than the drive gear, to provide the desired gear reduction. The driven gear is also in meshing engagement with the ring gear. A pair of idler gears is rotatably mounted within the gear housing and are in meshing engagement with both the drive and driven gear. The idler gears and drive gear do not have a common centerline. The assembly thus provides toothed contact via three gear sets combinations, which equalizes loading and eliminates the need for support bearings for the drive and driven gears.

Planetary drive assembly with idlers for low floor vehicle

A drive unit assembly utilizes a single input to drive a pair of laterally spaced wheel ends. Each wheel end is suspended independently from the other. The input is operatively coupled to only one of the wheel ends and an exposed axle shaft assembly interconnects the input to the opposite wheel end. The axle shaft assembly includes multiple shaft members to interconnect the laterally spaced wheel ends. One of the axle shaft members is mounted to a vehicle floor structure with a bearing mount and includes connection joints at either end to accommodate the independent motion of each wheel end. The floor and the shaft member move together during suspension travel, allowing the floor to have a lower profile than is traditionally available.

Drive assembly for low floor vehicle

A bushing block for use with a trunnion assembly of an independent suspension integrates a bearing cap and a bushing into a single component. A face seal is installed on a trunnion pin of the trunnion assembly. The bushing block is next assembled on the trunnion pin, the bushing block contacting the face seal. The trunnion assembly is installed on a lower control arm assembly, a pair of cap screw apertures on the bushing block aligning with a pair of cap screw apertures on the lower control arm assembly. Cap screws are installed therein. Grease grooves are formed on the interior surface of the bushing block to allow grease to flow down the exterior surface of the trunnion pin, eliminating additional machining on the trunnion pin.

Independent suspension bushing block

A differential case is provided including at least one assembly window formed therein for providing access to a chamber interior of the differential case. The assembly window in the differential case is defined by a pair of opposed circular edge portions of the differential case interconnected by a pair of opposed elongated edge portions of the differential case. The pair of opposed elongated edge portions have a dimension therebetween slightly larger than an outside diameter of a pair of side gears so as to allow angulated entry of the side gears into the chamber and subsequent alignment relative to a longitudinal axis. The pair of opposed circular edge portions include a radius slightly larger than a radius of a pair of pinion gears to allow entry of the pinion gears into the chamber and subsequent alignment relative to another longitudinal axis. As such, the assembly window permits easy assembly of the gear components into the differential case while improving the structural and functional characteristics thereof.
