A wireless butt set for testing a telephone line includes a base station that is connectable to tip and ring leads of a line under test and is configured to be operated by a wireless telephone handset. The handset is detachably nestable with the base station to form a hand-held integrated butt set assembly. This configuration allows a craftsperson to directly or remotely control the test set using controls of the wireless telephone handset. The internal circuitry of the base station is placed in a high impedance line-monitoring mode without going off-hook, in response to one 'click' of a talk switch of the handset, and goes off-hook in response to a 'double-click' of the talk switch the handset.

A test set interface automatically determines the type of communication link to which it is coupled, and then configures internal test circuitry to support testing of that particular type of line, irrespective of which of a plurality of different types of communication signals the line may be conveying. The interface includes a multiconductor line cord, end connections of which are configured for connection with any of multiple types of telecommunication circuits. A telecommunication circuit analysis is coupled to the line cord and to test circuitry, and is operative to analyze electrical characteristics of a respective telecommunication circuit to which the line cord is selectively connected by a test set microcontroller, so as to determine which of the different types of communication signals is being conveyed by the telecommunication circuit. In response to this determination, the test set configures its test circuitry to test the operation of the telecommunication circuit in accordance with the type of communication signal detected.

A variable geometry battery compartment of an electronic communication device, such as a telephone test set, is readily reconfigurable by the user, so that different sized batteries can be used to power the circuitry of the device. For this purpose, a moveable battery contact wall is repositionable between spaced apart locations relative to a fixed battery contact wall. A charging switch controls the establishment of a charging path for rechargeable batteries, and can only be engaged when the moveable wall is positioned to accommodate longer sized rechargeable batteries. Changing the position of the moveable battery contact wall to accommodate shorter, non-rechargeable batteries, will prevent the charging switch from being engaged by an activating boss in a cover of the device, so that shorter non-rechargeable batteries cannot be placed in circuit with a battery charger.

A unitary mounting carrier structure supports a display panel and acoustic transducer components within a housing sub-portion of a telephone test set containing a keypad, an earpiece receiver port, a display panel face, and an auxiliary speaker port at an end portion of the test set. The unitary carrier structure is generally wedge-configured and has a generally flat, liquid crystal display panel unit-mounting section upon which a shock-absorbing gasket assembly containing a display panel unit is mounted. An earpiece receiver-mounting section is contiguous with a wider end of the carrier, and is contiguous with the generally flat, display panel unit-mounting section. An auxiliary speaker-mounting section is supported by the carrier adjacent and transverse to the earpiece receiver-mounting section. A desiccant-retaining section is supported adjacent to the display panel unit-mounting section, and serves to reduce the dew point within the test set to a value in a range on the order of 0.degree.-65.degree. F., thereby preventing the display panel unit from `fogging-up`, as may otherwise occur when the test set is taken from an air-conditioned vehicle to a warm and humid outdoor environment.

A wire-insertion and cutting head for a telephone wire installing impact tool has a plurality of unitary wire-insertion and cutting blade elements embedded in a single resilient cutting blade support block. Each wire-insertion and cutting blade element has both a wire-insertion blade and an increased thickness knife edge molded as a single continuous hardened steel element. The knife edge is located relative to the slot in the cutting blade to ensure that the knife edge will consistently and reliably effect a clean cut of a respective wire against the surface of the terminal receptacle, as the wire is urged into the terminal receptacle by the blade during operation of the impact tool.

A line cord strain relief attachment assembly facilitates insertion and replacement of a two conductor line cord terminated by relatively small geometry terminal lug connectors, rather than a larger modular style multiconductor connector, such as an RJ-45 plug. The line cord strain relief attachment assembly includes a generally cylindrically configured strain relief element, made of a suitable flexible and waterproof material and having a flange spaced apart from one end of the element. The strain relief element has a diameter proximate to that of a generally circular aperture in a rear wall of the test set. Adjacent to the one end of the strain relief element its cross-section is reduced to form a sloped recess region. A line cord retention wedge has a slot which conforms with the recess region of the strain relief element. The slot is bounded by opposing ramp-configured walls, that are sloped to conform with the sloped surface of the tapered recess region of the strain relief element. As a result, when the line cord retention wedge is inserted into the test set and engages the sloped recess region of the strain relief element, the strain relief element is drawn into the aperture of the test set, bringing the flange of the strain relief element into sealing engagement with the external surface of the test set.

Unwanted acoustic noise and environmental degradation associated with the use of a highly sensitive microphone in a telephone test set are eliminated by a microphone-integrated keypad laminate architecture, in which a microphone is snugly captured within a microphone holder molded into a pliable keypad unit and its leads sealed against the environment and case vibration. The keypad unit is supported by a keypad support structure adjacent to the test set's keypad face, so that the microphone holder is retained adjacent to an acoustic coupling port, and the keypad's keys are accessible by way of keypad apertures in the keypad face. A printed circuit board urges the keypad unit into engagement with the keypad support structure. The keypad unit and the printed circuit board have sealed aperture arrangements through which electrical leads of the microphone pass for connection to the circuit board.

A strain relief attachment for attaching a telephone communication cord to a telephone test set has a line cord strain relief element, a grooved neck end of which is insertable through a tunnel through an end of the test set to a strain relief engagement cavity adjacent to a battery compartment of the test set and accessible by a battery door. The strain relief element includes a bore through which the line cord extends and a flange configured to conform with an external surface of the test set adjacent to the tunnel. The strain relief element engagement cavity is connected by a line cord passageway to the battery compartment. A wedge-shaped line cord retention plug is inserted into the strain relief engagement cavity, engaging the grooved neck of the line cord strain relief element and a wall surface of the strain relief engagement cavity. As the wedge-shaped line cord retention plug is inserted into the cavity, it draws the line cord strain relief element into the test set, urging the flange of the line cord strain relief element into sealing engagement with the external surface of the test set.

A pistol-configured, solenoid driven wire cutting and seating tool is connectable by way of a standard power cord to an AC voltage source and is used to seat and cut a wire by squeezing a trigger that operates a solenoid control circuit. The tool has a pistol-shaped grip and a generally cylindrically shaped barrel having a main barrel body and a nose portion. The solenoid has a bore adjacent to a butt region of the barrel, coextensive with a longitudinal axis of the barrel and accommodating the translation of a solenoid plunger. A solenoid plunger extension hammer extends from an end of the solenoid plunger, so that the plunger extension hammer extends into a generally annular cavity of the solenoid bore. Surrounding the solenoid plunger extension hammer is a solenoid return compression spring. A wire seating and cutting tool holder is axially translatable within the nose portion of the barrel. The tool holder receives a shaft of a wire seating and cutting tool and has a neck surrounded by a tool holder return compression spring. The solenoid control circuit includes an energizing current supply switch coupled in circuit with a power supply and the solenoid winding, and a switch control circuit, which is responsive to the operation of the trigger mechanism to render the energizing current supply switch conductive for a prescribed period of time and thereby apply an associated duration of firing current to the solenoid winding.
