A wrench utilizing high inertial torque energy incorporates a flywheel that is rotated by a drive motor. The wrench is activated by a symmetrical clutch to deliver the rotational energy stored in the flywheel to an output drive. Torque reaction is isolated in the flywheel and clutch mechanism and not transmitted to the housing of the wrench.

A stud driver and remover and a method of making the same overcomes the problems of the prior art and accommodates driving and removing of studs and subsequent removal of the studs from the stud driver and remover. The stud driver and remover constructed in accordance with the method of the present invention can drive and remove studs of any size without causing any significant damage to the stud, and the stud is subsequently easily removable from the stud driver and remover after a stud removal operation has been performed.

The improved stud driver and remover includes five drive rolls, and increased ratio between the cross-sectional areas of the stud and the drive rolls. The stud driver and remover also includes an increased roll length and decreased included angle which allows the roll to penetrate more deeply into the stud. Each of a plurality of cams formed in a core of the tool is provided with a recess to accommodate one of the rolls. These recesses allow the tool to be placed on a stud having a non-grip area such as a flange or threaded area and to drive and remove the stud without damaging the non-grip area.

The cooperation between the cams and the core is modified to accept an increased variance in stud size.

An automatic stud driving tool having greater concentricity and reduced run-out includes a cylindrical hollow body; a carriage disposed within the body including jaws for selectively gripping a stud; a driven head rotatable within the body and selectively engageable with the carriage; a snap ring assembly; and an annular retaining groove located on the inside of the hollow body. The driven head, located partially within the hollow body, is retained within the body by inserting the snap ring assembly into the retaining groove.
