Method and apparatus for making high compression structural foam

Novel cellular and non-cellular polymers are provided in which the major recurring polymer unit is isocyanurate which polymer comprises the reaction product obtained by bringing together an aromatic polyisocyanate, a trimerization catalyst, and a minor amount of a carbamate modifier. The use of the carbamate modifier allows for the presence of high catalyst levels without shortening the reaction initiation period. At the same time, the resulting cure is very rapid and the extent of cure much deeper than has heretofore been attainable.

Polyurethane elastomers are described which are not themselves soluble in organic polar solvents at ambient temperatures but which, upon heating to 140.degree. - 180.degree. C in the presence of said solvents, form solutions which are stable at ambient temperatures. The elastomers are obtained by reacting 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) with a polyester of polyether diol (M. W. = 750 to 2000) and diol extender in the presence of a monohydric alcohol (M. W. = 32 to 500). The elastomers generally have softening points in the range of 140.degree. C to 180.degree. C. Coating compositions derived from the above elastomers are also described.

Polyurethane coating compositions and process of preparation

A method and apparatus are disclosed for calibrating the individual amounts of each of several different reactive components separately recirculated in a closed loop system wherein separate portions of such components are periodically withdrawn from the system and intermixed in a mixing head of a reaction injection molding machine for delivery in homogeneously mixed condition to a closed mold under pressure. Calibrating means is provided to enable accurate monitoring and correction of the relative proportions of the reactive components delivered to the chamber of the mixing head, under actual operating pressure conditions prevailing during an actual injection molding operation, without substantially interrupting the molding process or requiring any dismantling of the apparatus to gain access to the individual component streams.

Method and apparatus for calibrating a reaction injection molding machine

A novel catalyst combination for the trimerization of polyisocyanates to polyisocyanurates is disclosed. The catalyst combination comprises (i) an alkali metal salt of an N-substituted amide, (ii) an alkali metal salt of an N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methyl glycine, and optionally a tertiary amine trimerization catalyst. The use of these catalyst combinations in the preparation of polyisocyanurate foams results in the facile continuous formation of laminate board stock. The polyisocyanurate foams produced using the novel catalyst combinations of the invention are characterized by having high resistance to heat distortion and volume change.
