In at least some implementations, a fuel system includes a first fuel pump and a first switch adapted to be coupled to a power supply, and a second fuel pump adapted to be coupled to the power supply. A conductor is provided between a first node between the first fuel pump and the first switch and a second node to which the second fuel pump is electrically coupled or electrically communicated so that depending upon the state of the first switch power may be supplied to the first fuel pump and second fuel pump in series or in parallel.

Fuel pump assembly with multiple pumps and variable output

In at least some implementations, a fuel pump assembly includes a first fuel pump and a second fuel pump that each have an electric motor, a pumping element driven by the motor, an inlet and an outlet through which fuel is discharged. The assembly also includes a passage communicated with the outlet of the first fuel pump and with the outlet of the second fuel pump, a fuel outlet in communication with the passage and through which fuel exits the fuel pump assembly, and a valve having an inlet in communication with the passage between the outlet of the first fuel pump and the outlet of the second fuel pump. The valve also having an outlet through which fuel exits the passage and a valve body that controls fuel flow through the valve.

Multiple pump fuel system

In at least some implementations, an assembly includes a reservoir, a primary fuel pump having an inlet in communication with the reservoir's internal volume, an outlet, a motor and a pumping element driven by the motor and a secondary fuel pump with a body having first and second inlets and an outlet. The first inlet receives fuel from the primary fuel pump and a nozzle is communicated with the first inlet and fuel flows out of the nozzle into the body via the first inlet. The second inlet is in communication with the reservoir inlet, and the outlet is in communication with the internal volume. The flow of fuel through the nozzle draws fuel from the fuel source through the second fuel inlet and that fuel is combined with the flow of fuel from the nozzle and discharged into the reservoir.

Fuel pump assembly with electric motor fuel pump and fluid driven fuel pump

In at least some implementations, a fuel pump assembly includes a fuel pump having an inlet through which fuel enters the fuel pump and a first outlet from which pressurized fuel is discharged for delivery to an engine, and a second outlet through which some of the fuel discharged from the fuel pump is routed wherein that fuel is not delivered to the engine, wherein the second outlet has a flow area that permits a flow of fuel through the second outlet that is sufficient to reduce the maximum pressure of fuel downstream of the first outlet for delivery to an engine to between 1/10th and 1/25th of the output pressure of the fuel pump without flow through the second outlet.

Fuel pump assembly with diverted flow

A liquid level sensor includes a liquid level responsive member that moves in response to changing liquid level, an electrically conductive contact associated with the liquid level responsive member, a circuit including a rectifying element and a) one or more conductive elements, or b) one or more resistive elements or c) one or more conductive elements and one or more resistive elements, wherein the contact is arranged to engage at least one of the elements in a, b, or c, and a power supply. The power supply is adapted to provide a voltage to the circuit causing a current flow in a first direction in the circuit wherein the current flows through the contact and to provide a current flow in a second direction in the circuit wherein the rectifying element prevents current flow through the contact.

Liquid level sensor

In at least some implementations, a fuel supply module includes a reservoir and a fuel pump carried by the reservoir. The reservoir may include a body and a lid that define an internal volume to contain a supply of fuel, and the reservoir may include an inlet through which fuel enters the internal volume and an outlet from which fuel is discharged from the fuel supply module. The fuel pump is carried by the reservoir and has a first inlet communicating with the internal volume to take fuel into the fuel pump from the internal volume and a second inlet spaced above the first inlet relative to the direction of the force of gravity to take fluid or vapors into the fuel pump from the internal volume. The fuel pump includes an outlet from which fluid is discharged for delivery to an engine through the reservoir outlet.

Fuel supply module and control system

In at least some implementations, a system includes a pump having an electric motor and a pump outlet, a controller coupled to the pump to vary the power provided to the motor to vary the flow rate of liquid discharged from the pump outlet, a pressure regulator having an inlet communicated with the pump outlet, a regulator outlet from which liquid is discharged from the regulator, a bypass outlet through which liquid is discharged from the regulator, and a pressure responsive valve that opens to permit liquid flow through the bypass outlet, and a flow sensor. The flow sensor is communicated with the bypass outlet to sense or determine a flow rate of liquid at or downstream of the bypass outlet, the flow sensor also communicated with the controller to provide an indication of the bypassed liquid flow rate to the controller.

Fuel system with variable output fuel pump

In at least some implementations, a wire includes a core formed from an electrically conductive material and having an outer surface, and a polymeric insulator surrounding the core. The insulator has a resistivity of between 10and 10ohms/square, and the insulator has an inner surface engaged with the core. In at least some implementations, the core is formed from metal and has a conductivity of at least 1&#xd7;10&#x2212;6 &#x3a9;m. The insulator may include a base material and a conductive material in the base material, wherein the conductive material has a conductivity between 10and 10ohms/square. The insulator may have an outer surface that defines an outer surface of the wire and/or the insulator may have an inner surface engaged with the core.

In at least some implementations, a fluid pump includes a drive shaft including at least one drive surface and a pumping element. The pumping element includes an opening in which a portion of the drive shaft is received so that the pumping element is driven for rotation by the drive shaft, and the opening is larger than the drive shaft to provide a clearance between the pumping element and at least part of the drive shaft. The pumping element also includes at least one engagement surface arranged to be engaged by the drive surface of the drive shaft when the drive shaft is rotated where one or both of the drive surface and the engagement surface are angled to provide a surface area of engagement between the drive surface and engagement surface that is at least 1% of the surface area of the drive surface.

Fluid pump with shaft driven pumping element

A fluid pump includes an electric motor having a commutator and one or more brushes communicated with the commutator, and a pumping assembly driven by the electric motor. An outer shell of the pump encloses at least a portion of the electric motor and the pumping assembly, a cap is carried by the outer shell and has a brush passage formed therein for each brush, with each brush passage including a cavity defined by at least one wall. A brush cap has an end received in the cavity with an interference fit wherein the end of the brush cap has an outer diameter that is larger than the diameter of the cavity and the end of the brush cap has strength that causes it to deform upon installation into the cavity without causing significant plastic deformation of the wall of the cavity.

Fuel pump assembly

A fluid pump may include an electric motor having an output shaft driven for rotation about an axis and a pump assembly coupled to the output shaft. The pump assembly has a first cap and a second cap with at least one pumping channel defined between the first and second caps, and an impeller between the first and second caps. The impeller is driven for rotation by the output shaft of the motor and includes a plurality of vanes in communication with the at least one pumping channel. Each vane has a root segment and a tip segment and a line from a base of the root segment to an outer edge of the tip segment trails a line extending from the axis of rotation to the base of the root segment by an angle of between 0&#xb0; and 30&#xb0; relative to the direction of rotation of the impeller.

Impeller and fluid pump

A fuel system valve assembly may include a housing, a spring, and a body. The housing may have a fuel passage defined in part or more by a fuel passage wall. The fuel passage wall may have a seat and a cylindrical section. The cylindrical section may have a constant diameter and may be located downstream of the seat. In use, the body may reciprocate linearly in the housing between an open position and a closed position. The body may be biased to the closed position by the spring. The body may abut the seat when the body is in the closed position.

Fuel system valve assembly

In one implementation, a liquid pump includes a pumping element, an electric motor and a brush housing. The electric motor is coupled to the pumping element to drive the pumping element for rotation, and the motor has a commutator, brushes engaged with the commutator to provide electricity to the commutator and at least one biasing member yieldably biasing the brushes into engagement with the commutator. The brush housing defines brush cavities in which the brushes are received, where the brushes have a first surface engaged with the commutator and a second surface spaced from the first surface and acted upon by said at least one biasing member. The second surface is inclined at an acute included angle relative to the first surface.

Electric motor driven liquid pump and brush for same

A pressure control valve has a non-uniformly tapered valve bore that has an increasing diameter as it extends downstream. An interface angle, defined in part between a valve ball and the valve bore in the area of the smallest gap between them, increases as the valve ball is increasingly displaced away from a valve seat of the valve bore.
