The improved joint of the present invention includes a wellhead housing and its complementary member forming the joint and they include surfaces which taper both inwardly and away from the joint surfaces together with straight cylindrical sealing surfaces extending away from the inner end of the tapered surfaces. One form of improved seal includes a sealing ring having a tubular body with an external flange or hub to be clamped between the joint surfaces of the joint members, tapered external surfaces which mate with and provide a tight sealing engagement with the tapered surfaces of the joint members and tubular rims extending away from the tapered surfaces and having sufficient length to protect the straight cylindrical sealing surfaces of the joint members. A modified form of improved seal includes a sealing ring having a tubular body with an external flange to be clamped between the joint surfaces of the joint members, and tubular rims terminating in an external rounded portion having a short annular flat sealing surface thereon for engaging the straight cylindrical sealing surfaces of the joint members at a position spaced axially from the tapered sealing surfaces of the joint members.

Wellhead joint and sealing ring

An improved tubular joint including an inner tubular member, an outer tubular member having a central bore therethrough, a counterbore extending from the open end of the counterbore and terminating in a shoulder between the counterbore and the central bore, and internal threads on the outer end of the counterbore, a sleeve positioned within the counterbore, a retainer ring threaded into the counterbore threads and retaining the sleeve within the counterbore, ribs on the interior of the sleeve and a seal between the exterior of the sleeve and the interior of the counterbore so that pressure forming of the inner tubular member forms it into tight gripping and sealing engagement with the sleeve and the sleeve is sealed within the outer tubular member to form a completed improved tubular joint.

Tubular joint

An improved annular seal and hanger which are to be installed in a wellhead housing. The annular seal assembly includes seal ring having a central body with upper outer rim, upper inner rim, lower outer rim and lower inner rim extending from said central body, an upper wedge ring, a lower wedge ring and means connecting said rings to allow setting movement thereof, means releasably securing said assembled rings to the hanger for running into the wellhead housing, each of said rims including an outer sealing lip, the outer sealing lips having a free diameter less than the diameter of the lower wedge ring so that the sealing lips are protected during running of the hanger into the wellhead housing and means for moving said wedge rings into the space between the rims of said seal ring for urging the sealing lips into sealing engagement with the interior sealing surface of said housing.

A wellhead assembly with an increased through bore for passing slightly oversized drill bits therethrough with a substantially reduced landing shoulder, and an improved landing assembly which transfers a portion of the stresses through the energizing ring and support ring into the wellhead body along the straight bore above said landing shoulder.

A tubular joint having two tubular members having an inner end tapered to provide sealing surfaces, means for joining the tubular members together with the tapered end surfaces adjoining each other, and a seal ring having an inner surface and tapered outer surfaces mating with the tapers of the tapered end surfaces and at least one port through the ring from the mid point of one of its tapered outer surfaces to its inner surface.

There is disclosed a riser pipe having telescoping sections which are held in retracted position by a part which is adapted to sever upon application of a predetermined tensile load, and a fluid-actuated connector at its lower end which is adapted to be released from connection with a blowout preventer stack at the upper end of an underwater wellhead automatically in response to extension of said sections upon severance of said part.
