A method and apparatus for making an absorbent composite from continuous tow is disclosed. The method and apparatus includes the steps of or means for spreading a crimped tow; de-registering the crimped tow; shaping the de-registered tow to a substantially rectangular cross-section; and distributing a particulate onto the shaped tow. The step of or means for spreading the tow uses at least two banding jets.

The invention provides an air opening jet for use in a process for making a rectangular structure made from a tow of fibers, such air opening jet including a housing, an air jet for moving the tow through the housing and opening the tow, and an accumulating chamber that includes at least one, and preferably two, perforated plates located in the path of the moving tow, and an air control arrangement for controlling the flow of air so that the moving tow is urged into engagement with the perforated plates to retard movement of the tow and cause it to properly accumulate in the accumulation chamber. The disclosure disclosed a fabric made of cellulose acetate and/or cellulose triacetate, and optionally fibers of other selected substances, which are calendered at selected temperatures and pressures after having been water-wetted to a selected water content in order to bond the fibers of cellulose acetate and/or triacetate to one another and/or to fibers of the other selected substances. The selected calendering temperatures are from about 130&deg; C. to about 210&deg; C., preferably from about 160&deg; C. to about 190&deg; C.; the selected pressures are from about 500 to about 5000 psi, preferably from about 500 to about 2500 psi and most preferably from about 1000 to about 2500 psi; and selected water content is from about 20% to about 600% of fabric dry weight. The physical properties of the calendered fabric, for example the stiffness or hand resulting from different degrees of bonding can be changed by altering one or more of there parameters, either separately or in combination. The physical properties can also be changed by changed by changing the rate at which the fabric is passed between the calendering rollers or the type of rollers used, for example, smooth versus embossed or patterned rollers.

A filtration structure comprising a thermally bonded, wet laid, fibrous web and support is provided. The web is formed from bicomponent fiber comprising a structure-forming component and a heat-bondable component. Also provided is a filtration method using the filtration structure. A composition for the adhesive activation of polymeric material. The composition is comprised of a non-resinous quaternary ammonium salt of a polyepoxide wherein the nitrogen atom of the ammonium group is bonded directly to a carbon atom of the polyepoxide and wherein the composition is substantially free of free amine. The composition may be used as a spin finish or topcoat composition and is particularly useful in the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate tire cord which is ultimately incorporated into rubber.

Aqueous coating composition, useful on metal substrates which are deep drawn after being coated, e.g., bottle caps, are made from (A) a blend of an aqueous solution of the reaction product of a glycidyl polyether of a dihydric phenol, a polyethylene glycol and phosphoric acid, (B) an aqueous dispersion of a glycidyl polyether of a dihydric phenol and, optionally, (C) an alkoxymethylmelamine.

Water reducible epoxy based coating compositions

An improved process is provided for the formation of a high performance polyester (at least 85 mol percent polyethylene terephthalate) multifilament yarn. The product possesses a high strength (at least 7.5 grams per denier) and an unusually stable internal structure which renders it particularly suited for use in industrial applications at elevated temperatures. The filaments are melt spun and uniformly quenched under relatively high stress conditions (as described) to yield an as-spun filamentary material of relatively high birefringence (+9.times.10.sup.-3 to +70.times.10.sup.-3) which is passed in-line from the quench zone to a first draw zone where it is drawn at a draw ratio of 1.01:1 to 3.0:1, and subsequently is drawn (as described) to achieve at least 85 percent of the maximum draw ratio of the as-spun filamentary material. The resulting filamentary material exhibits unusually low shrinkage and hysteresis characteristics (i.e. work loss characteristics) as well as the high strength chatracteristics. Accordingly, when utilized in the formation of a tire cord and embedded in a rubber matrix a highly stable tire may be formed which exhibits a significantly lesser heat generation upon flexing.

Production of improved polyester filaments of high strength possessing

An improved high performance polyester (at least 85 mol percent polyethylene terephthalate) multifilament yarn possessing a novel internal structure is provided. The multifilament yarn of the present invention possesses a high strength (at least 7.5 grams per denier) and an unusually stable internal structure which renders it particularly suited for use in industrial applications at elevated temperatures. As described in detail hereafter the subject multifilamentary material exhibits unusually low shrinkage and hysteresis characteristics (i.e. work loss characteristics) coupled with the high strength characteristics normally associated with polyester industrial yarns. Accordingly, when utilized in the formation of a tire cord and embedded in a rubber matrix, a highly stable tire may be formed which exhibits a significantly lesser heat generation uon flexing.

A route is provided for the formation of a polybenzimidazole solid material having an enhanced resistance to undergo the usual color darkening upon exposure to light. A minor concentration of a finely divided pigment found capable of stabilizing the background color inherently manifest by the polybenzimidazole polymer is dispersed in a solution of the polybenzimidazole, and the solvent is removed to produce a polybenzimidazole solid having the pigment substantially uniformly distributed therein. The pigment utilized may be arsenic thioarsenate, copper phthalocyanine, anatase titanium dioxide, or mixtures thereof. Fibers, films, three-dimensional shaped articles, etc. may be formed from the color stabilized polybenzimidazole.

Rendering polybenzimidazole solid materials more resistant to darkening

Heretofore polybenzimidazole fibrous materials have proven to be extremely difficult to dye successfully. The present invention provides an effective route for the achievement of a satisfactorily dyed polybenzimidazole fibrous material. The fibrous material initially is contacted at an elevated temperature with a liquid (e.g., an aqueous emulsion) comprising an organic swelling agent and salicylic acid to form polybenzimidazonium salicylate, and subsequently is dyed with an anionic dyestuff. Complete and uniform dye penetration is made possible through the use of the present process, and the resulting dyed article is capable of resisting dye sublimation when utilized in an environment where elevated temperatures are encountered.
