A method of processing a digital image (medical, radiograph) in order to enhance viewing of the image when it is presented for display on a display device (video monitor). An original medical image is digitized and precompensation applied to the digital values to optimize the information content and detail at a CRT, for example. The luminance dynamic range and the spatial frequency content of the original image are reduced to present the most usable image on a display device. The characteristics of the human visual system and the ambient light incident on a calibrated display are factors in the final precompensation of the image.

Method for precompensation of digital images for enhanced presentation

A laser printer is disclosed with three separate channels. Each channel includes a gas laser which projects a beam at a particular wavelength along the channel optical axis. A beam combiner receives the light beams from the three channels and combines them to form a combined beam spot at a registration plane. The combined beam spot is relayed to a polygon which scans the beam onto a receiving medium. In order to minimize laser pointing errors and eliminate artifacts in the image, optical means are provided for adjusting the size of the beam for optimum operation and for making the combined beam spot optically conjugate with a plane in each channel at a preselected point in the channel from which the pointing errors originate.

Laser beam noise reducing apparatus includes an acoustooptic cell which receives a noisy input laser light beam and produces an undiffracted or zero-order light beam and a diffracted beam in response to an RF signal at a predetermined frequency. The zero-order beam is applied to a utilization device which produces an information modulated output beam at an image zone. The zero-order beam at the output of the acoustooptic cell is sampled and AC and DC component signals are produced which are functions of fast and slow time varying changes, respectively, in the intensity of the zero-order beam. The output beam from the utilization device is sampled when it is unmodulated and a DC reference signal which represents the intensity of the DC component at the image zone is produced. The AC and DC component signals and the reference signal are combined and used to control the amplitude of the RF signal to reduce noise in the beam at the image zone.

Laser light beam noise reducing apparatus

A multi-format laser printer is disclosed which uses a constantly rotating polygon to line scan an intensity modulated beam of laser light across an image zone. Optical means, which include a cylindrical mirror are provided for causing first and second beam spot sizes to be in focus at the image zone. The first beam spot size is selected to be in focus for a first range of line scan lengths and the second beam spot size is selected to be in focus for at least one predetermined line scan length not in such range. The line scan length in the first range is adjusted by changing the periodicity of modulation of the laser beam. The velocity of the photosensitive member is adjusted to change the length of the output image in the page scan direction.

Laser printer for printing a plurality of output-images sizes

A laser printer is disclosed which uses a rotating polygon and a cylindrical mirror disposed between the polygon and an image zone. The cylindrical mirror corrects for pyramidal errors in an output image formed on a moving photosensitive member disposed at the image zone by making the operative polygon facet and the image zone optically conjugate in the page scan direction. To change the length of the image in the line scan direction at the image zone, the distance between the polygon and image zone is varied. This is accomplished by moving the cylindrical mirror or by positioning a different cylindrical mirror at a new optical path position. The velocity of the photosensitive member is adjusted to change the length of the output image in the page scan direction. The tilt angle of the cylindrical mirror moved to the new optical path position is changed or the cylindrical mirror is removed from the path and a different cylindrical mirror is inserted at a new optical path position. In either case, at the new image format size, the cylindrical mirror makes the operative polygon facet optically conjugate with the image zone in the page scan direction to correct for pyramidal errors. Anamorphic beam shaping optics are provided which preceed the polygon to form and position the line scan waist so that it is adjacent to the image zone at different line scan lengths, and to change the beam size at the polygon in the page scan direction at different page scan lengths.

Laser printer having means for changing the output-image size

A method and apparatus are disclosed for performing chemical analysis on selected fluids. The apparatus comprises a turntable which carries a plurality of cartridges containing test slides. A transfer mechanism is adapted to receive a slide from a selected cartridge, transport the slide to a metering device where a precise amount of fluid is deposited thereon, and then deliver the slide to a conveyor which moves the slide through an incubator. A radiometric reading of the slide is taken while it is in the incubator.

Method and apparatus for chemical analysis

A scanner is provided for radiometric analysis of a substrate of the type which can require a controlled environment. The substrates are positioned on platforms rotated about an axis, and at least a portion of the radiometer is mounted for rotation independently of the platform rotation.
