Films having islands of noble metal protruding from and surrounded by a layer of a superconductor are formed by depositing a layer a noble metal on a substrate, and depositing a superconducting layer at a temperature that converts the noble metal film into puddles. The resulting film is useful as a two-dimensional array of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson junctions.

High temperature superconductor composite thin film devices with easily moved Josephson vortices are described having high T,and good magnetic vortex properties. A preferred composite material was YBCO/CeO,thin film on a MgO substrate. The superconductor composites were preferably formed by off-axis co-sputtering. A surprising recovery in properties was seen after plasma etching with oxygen.

A CVD process for forming a layer or layers of superconducting materials on a semiconductor substrate in which volatile organometallic compounds of bismuth, strontium, calcium and copper are heated in the presence of a carrier gas in a first chamber free of hydrolyzing agents. Under conditions free of hydrolyzing agents, the carrier gas transports a predetermined quantity of the volatile organometallic compounds of the bismuth, strontium, calcium and copper to a deposition chamber. The compounds are decomposed and deposit mixed oxides on the substrate. Subsequent to deposition of the mixed oxides of the desired elements the layer is sintered in an oxygen-rich atmosphere, and formed into a superconducting film by subsequent slow cooling still in an oxygen-rich atmosphere.

Formation of superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films by organometallic

A method of fabricating Josephson junction integrated circuits in which the active layers are deposited within an ultra-high vacuum system during a single pumpdown of the system. Subsequent anisotropic etching defines the devices by etching away complete layers in some areas so as to isolate the Josephson junction device.

Method for making Josephson junctions with contamination-free interfaces

A method of forming a high T.sub.c niobium nitride (NbN) film on a substr at ambient substrate temperature. The method includes the step of reactively sputtering NbN onto the substrate in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere with controlled amounts of methane added to the argon-nitrogen gas mixture.
