An energy storage medium that can be raised to a high energy state which is comprised of a gel of polyethylene oxide, water, and a salt which causes gelation of polyethylene oxide and water at or below about 90.degree. C., and a method for storing energy with the medium.

Energy storage medium and method

A composition for the prevention of spontaneous combustion of coal is described which is comprised of at least about 2 percent of polyethylene oxide and the balance water. Also described is a method for reducing the spontaneous combustion tendency of coal by contacting coal with the above composition and then drying the coal.

Reduction of spontaneous combustion of coal

A method for reducing the moisture content of coal is described which comprises contacting coal with an aqueous solution of at least 0.1 percent of polyethylene oxide with a molecular weight of at least 200,000 so that at least 1 gram of polyethylene oxide per 1000 grams of coal is deposited upon the coal, and then evaporating the water. The preferred method for contacting the coal with the aqueous solution is by spraying the solution onto the coal.

Moisture reduction

A dust suppressant composition is described which is comprised of at least about 0.001 percent of polyethylene oxide with a molecular weight of at least about 6500, with the balance being water. Also described is a method for suppressing the formation of dust particles by applying the aforementioned composition to a dust-producing material such that at least about 0.01 grams of polyethylene oxide is applied per 100 square inches of flat surface area of dust-producing material.
