A lubricating oil composition comprising, or made by mixing, a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of at least one compound comprising a polynuclear molybdenum core having bonded thereto one or more monoanionic ligands capable of rendering the compound oil-soluble or oil-dispersible, and further comprising at least one ionic species that is not required to confer oil-solubility or oil-dispersibility to the compound, wherein the combination of said one or more monoanionic ligands and said at least one ionic species confers electrical neutrality to the compound and wherein the ratio of the number of molybdenum atoms in the core to the number of said ligands is greater than 1:1.

Lubricant compositions

The present invention is related to a method for oligomerizing olefinic monomers under oligomerization conditions to form higher olefins. The novel method comprises contacting a feed comprising the olefinic monomers with a catalyst composition comprising the reaction product of: (a) a compound having a formula selected from the group consisting of M&lsqb;S C (R R )&rsqb; and M&lsqb;S C (R R R R )&rsqb; , wherein M is a late transition metal, R , R , R , R , R and R are independently selected and may be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, electron-withdrawing groups and unsubstituted and substituted hydrocarbyl groups; and (b) an activating cocatalyst. The improved method advantageously relates to oligomerizing olefinic monomers from feed streams having contaminants, especially sulfur-containing contaminants.

Method for oligomerizing olefins to form higher olefins using sulfur-containing and sulfur-tolerant catalysts

The inventions disclosed herein are catalyst systems comprising a complex having one of the formulas LMX X and LML&prime; and an activating cocatalyst, and use of the catalyst system in polymerizing olefinic monomers. In either of the foregoing formulas, L is a chelating ligand containing sulfur donors; M is a transition metal selected from either copper, silver, gold, manganese, iron, cobalt, palladium or nickel; X and X are independently selected from either halides, hydride, triflate, acetate, borate, alkyl, alkoxyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkoxyl, aryl, thiolate, carbon monoxide, cyanate or olefins; and L&prime; is a bidentate ligand selected from either dithiolene, dithiolate, diphosphine, bisimine, bispyridine, phenanthroline, oxolate, catecholate, thiolatoamide, thiolatoimine or thiolatophosphine.

Sulfur-containing and sulfur-nitrogen-containing catalysts for polymerization of olefins and polar monomers

Oil-soluble or oil-dispersible trinuclear molybdenum-sulfur compounds are made by reacting, in a polar medium, a reactant molybdenum compound containing an anion that possesses a trinuclear molybdenum core, and a dithiocarbamate that is produced in situ.

Manufacture of lubricant additives

A lubricating oil composition is provided comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of, as an additive, at least one compound comprising a polynuclear molybdenum core and bonded thereto one or more anionic ligands capable of rendering the compound oil-soluble or oil-dispersible, wherein the ratio of the number of molybdenum atoms in the core to the number of said ligands is 1:1, such as 3:2 or greater.

The invention relates to lubricating oil compositions of a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity in admixture with an effective minor amount of an oil soluble or dispersible trinuclear molybdenum containing complex and of an antioxidant, preferably, copper containing antioxidants and diphenyl amines and effective diphenylamine derivatives to enhance the lubricating properties of the oil. Also included are additive concentrates containing these compositions. The invention further includes the method of making these compositions.

Molybdenum-antioxidant lube oil compositions

A novel scheme for olefin recovery/separation based on the redox properties of metal dithiolene complexes is described. The complex, &lsqb;1,2-bis(cyano)ethylene-1,2-dithiolato&rsqb;nickel, &lsqb;Ni(S,C,(CN),),&rsqb;, when generated electrochemically, binds olefin to form an adduct. The olefin is released when the olefin adduct is reduced electrochemically. The reduced form of the metal dithiolene complex can then be re-oxidized to complete the cycle. For olefins such as 1-hexene, propylene, and ethylene, fast olefin binding and release is observed when modulated electrochemically. Olefin binding/release rates are fast as compared to the electrochemistry experiment (second or sub-second time-scale).

Electrochemical process for olefin recovery using transition metal dithiolene complexes

A lubricating oil composition is provided comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of at least one trinuclear molybdenum compound. Preferably, the trinuclear molybdenum compound is selected from those compounds having the formula Mo,S,L,Q,and mixtures thereof in which L is a ligand having organo groups with a sufficient number of carbon atoms to render the compound soluble in the oil, k varies from 4 through 7, Q is selected from the group of compounds having lone pair electrons including water, amines, alcohols, phosphines, and ethers, and z ranges from 0 to 5. In general, the organo groups of the mono-anionic ligands will be the same although they may be different, and they preferably are selected from alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, and ether groups. For example, when L is a dialkyldithiocarbamate or a dialkyldithiophosphate, the alkyl groups will have from about 1 to 30 carbon atoms.

Trinuclear molybdenum multifunctional additive for lubricating oils

A lubricating oil composition is provided comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of, as an additive, at least one compound comprising a trinuclear tungsten core and bonded thereto a ligand or ligands capable of rendering the compound oil-soluble or oil-dispersible.

Lubricating oil compositions

Enhanced synthesis of transition metal dithiolene complexes is described. [1,2-bis(Trifluoromethyl)ethylene-1,2-dithiolato]nickel selectively and reversibly binds olefins (C.sub.2 to C.sub.6). Under the same conditions, the complex does not react with H.sub.2 O, C.sub.2 H.sub.2, CO, and H.sub.2, and only slowly reacts with H.sub.2 S at high concentrations. The compositions are useful for selective removal and recovery of olefins from process streams containing contaminants such as CO and H.sub.2 S.

Use of metal dithiolene complexes in selective olefin recovery (law760)

Oil-soluble or oil-dispersible trinuclear molybdenum-sulfur compounds are made by reacting less than three, such as 1.5 to 2.5, preferably two to 2.1, molar equivalents of a disulfide with one molar equivalent of a compound containing the [Mo.sub.3 S.sub.13 ].sup.2- ion. The trinuclear compounds include S-containing ligands that are derived from the disulfide reactant via cleavage of the disulfide bond; the ligands are bound to the core via the S atoms.

Lubricant additives

The invention is a method for improving the friction reduction and friction reduction retention performance of a lubricating oil comprising adding to the lubricating oil a trinuclear molybdenum sulfur compound selected from the group of trinuclear molybdenum compounds preferably those having the formulas Mo.sub.3 S.sub.7 (dtc).sub.4 and Mo.sub.3 S.sub.4 (dtc).sub.4 and mixtures thereof wherein dtc represents independently selected diorganodithiocarbamate ligands containing independently selected organo groups and wherein the ligands have a sufficient number of carbon atoms among all the organo groups of the compound's ligands are present to render the compound soluble or dispersible in the lubricating oil. Concentrates of the composition are also included in the invention.

Enhancement of frictional retention properties in a lubricating

A method of making an oil-soluble or oil-dispersible trinuclear molybdenum-sulfur compound, comprising: reacting two to less than three equivalents of a tetrahydrocarbyl thiuram disulfide and one equivalent of a compound containing the �Mo.sub.3 S.sub.13 !.sup.2- ion to produce a trinuclear molybdenum compound of the formula Mo.sub.3 S.sub.x (L).sub.4 wherein x is from 4 to 10 and L is dihydrocarbyl-dithiocarbamate.

Method of synthesizing Mo.sub.3 S.sub.x containing compounds

The invention is a method for enhancing and restoring the friction reduction effectiveness of a lubricating oil comprising adding to the lubricating oil a trinuclear molybdenum sulfur compound selected from the group of trinuclear molybdenum compounds preferably those having the formulas Mo.sub.3 S.sub.7 (dtc).sub.4 and Mo.sub.3 S.sub.4 (dtc).sub.4 and mixtures thereof wherein dtc represents independently selected diorganodithiocarbamate ligands containing independently selected organo groups and wherein the ligands have a sufficient number of carbon atoms among all the organo groups of the compound's ligands are present to render the compound soluble or dispersible in the lubricating oil. The oil may be a fresh or used oil. Concentrates of the composition are also included in the invention.
