A grinding machine control is provided having a compensation circuit for providing correction signals to modify the point at which a wheelhead infeed cycle is terminated. The correction signals represent varying infeed offset values produced in response to the number of completed infeed cycles following a grinding wheel sharpening operation. The correction signals are derived from a plurality of empirically determined functions relating the number of completed infeed cycles for a particular combination of workpiece and tooling design to deviations of workpiece diameter from a desired dimension.

A grinding machine in which the grinding cycle is controlled by a stepping motor which receives pulses from a linear feed-controlled generator and which is operative to give an adjustable diamond clearance.

Grinding machine

A multimodal cycle for a grinding machine is modified as the function of the grinding force and the mode of operation. The grinding force is monitored by measuring the electrical load value upon the grinding wheel motor during operating conditions and biasing this value by a stored value representative of the nongrinding idle load. The idle load bias is updated with each grinding cycle and the grinding force signal is used to control a variety of machine operations. If the grinding force signal exceeds a predetermined threshold during an early portion of the grinding cycle, the wheelhead advancement is terminated; while the same situation in a later portion of the cycle permits continued wheelhead advancement but at a reduced rate. The grinding force signal is also used to count parts and detect part absence. It is further used to regulate rough and finished spark-outs as well as a peak load limit for the grinding cycle. The threshold level for these latter three functions is further modulated in accordance to the size of the grinding wheel.

Grinding machine control

An apparatus is provided for moving a machine element along a straight line path in a plane defined by two orthogonal axes of motion. A switching device is provided for producing an input signal representing the slope of the straight line path which is defined by the tangent of the angle formed between the path and a first axis of motion. In accordance with mechanisms known in the prior art, first output pulses are generated for moving the machine element along the first axis of motion at an arbitrary velocity. The invention provides a counter circuit having a modulus as a function of the component of slope along the first axis of motion. Further in response to the input signal and each of the first output pulses, the counter circuit increments a number of times represented by the component of slope along the second axis of motion. Each time the counter circuit cycles through its modulus, a carry signal is generated which represents a second output pulse for incrementally moving the machine element along the second axis of motion.
