An oxidative hair dye system comprises a hair dye, an organometallic compound and an oxidising agent. The organometallic compound is preferably an organotitanate compound, particularly a tetraalkyl titanate or a titanate chelate. Such compounds are also useful for enhancing the substantivity of topical compositions applied to the body, which comprise one or more cosmetic and/or therapeutic benefit agents, a bonding agent having hydrolysable or exchangeable ligands, and a carrier.

Oxidative hair dyes and related topical compositions

There are described personal care compositions containing a) one or more dibenzoylmethane sunscreening agents; and b) a photostablising amount of a salicylate ester of formula (1): (2-OH)Ph-(CO)&#x2014;O&#x2014;R, wherein R represents an alkyl group consisting of a chain of from 7 to 16 carbon atoms substituted by at least one group selected from methyl and ethyl. The compound of formula (1) is preferably isodecyl salicylate or isotridecyl salicylate. The salicylate esters of formula (1) have a stabilizing effect on the compositions. The salicylate esters prevent or inhibit degradation of the sunscreening agents which would otherwise lead to a reduction in the efficacy of the sunscreening agents and an increase in the deleterious effects of exposure to sunlight on the user of the compositions or on the compositions themselves.

An oral hygiene composition comprises an effective amount of an antimicrobial agent in the form of a particulate non-ion-exchanging support material combined with a metal source providing antimicrobial metal ions in use. Preferably the antimicrobial agent is particulate titanium dioxide coated with silver chloride.

Anti-microbial compositions

A sunscreening composition which comprises a water-in-oil emulsion which comprises a) 0.5 to 30% by weight of titanium dioxide having a mean primary particle size of less than 100 nm, b) 5 to 20% by weight of an oil phase, c) 1 to 15% by weight of an emulsifier, and d) at least 40% by weight of an aqueous phase. The titanium dioxide may be coated with aluminium stearate. Further sunscreening agents may be included. The oil phase may be a hydrocarbon oil, a wax, a natural oil, a silicone oil or a mixture. Preferred emulsifiers are sesquioleates such as polyglyceryl-2-sesquioleate or sorbitan sesquioleate, polyethoxylated esters of derivatives of natural oils such as polyethoxylated esters of hydrogenated castor oil or silicone emulsifiers such as silicone polyols.
