A powder composition including a resin and from 5% to 70%, by weight based on powder composition weight, of a corrosion-inhibiting pigment, optionally including from 0% to 65%, by weight based on powder composition weight, zinc, the composition being substantially free from pigment providing a metallic effect is provided. The corrosion-inhibiting pigment may be present in amounts of up to 50%, by weight based on powder composition weight, for example, up to 35%. A method for coating a substrate with the powder composition and the coated substrate so formed are also provided.

Powder corrosion and chip-resistant coating

The present invention provides chip-resistant powder topcoats for corrosion resistant powder coated steel substrates, such as, for example, automotive suspension coil springs, comprising powder coatings formed from one or more wax and a resin component of one or more toughened epoxy resin. The present invention provides dual coatings of toughened epoxy powder basecoats and topcoats, which may be foamed and/or fiber reinforced. The powder used to form the chip resistant topcoat can further comprise up to 200 phr or, preferably, up to 75 phr of one or more extender, or 0.5 or more phr of one or more extender, such as barium sulfate, while fully retaining its chip resistant properties. In addition, the powder used to form the chip resistant topcoat can be a low temperature curing powder comprising one or more low temperature curing agent. The invention provides methods for making the dual coatings comprising applying to the substrate a toughened, zinc-loaded, epoxy coating powder, applying to the powder coated substrate a wax containing toughened epoxy topcoat and heating to fuse or cure the coating powders.

Thin chip resistant powder topcoats for steel

Coating powders with enhanced electrostatic attraction to low conductivity substrates such as engineered wood are disclosed. The addition of conductive fillers to low temperature cure coating powder compositions improves the coating of difficult to coat substrates such as raised panel cabinet doors. Low temperature cure coating powders containing conductive additives can be applied to preheated engineered wood substrates. Also disclosed are methods for forming a powder coating on a low conductivity substrate.

Coating powders, methods of manufacture thereof, and articles formed therefrom

The present invention provides a low temperature curing coating powder composition comprising a mixture of a high gloss film-forming system and a low gloss film-forming system. Preferably, the high gloss film-forming system comprises a GMA (glycidyl methacrylate) resin, a curing agent, and a catalyst and forms a coating having a gloss greater than 80% measured at 60&#xb0;. Preferably the low gloss film-forming system comprises a carboxyl terminated polyester, acrylic resin and a catalyst and forms a coating having a gloss less than 50% measured at 60&#xb0;. The composition of the present invention provides coatings having a control gloss, which can range from a low to a high gloss and is useful for coating heat-sensitive substrates.

Coating powder composition, method of use thereof, and articles formed therefrom

Thermosetting powder coating composition adapted to provide a uniform, fine textured finish onto heat sensitive substrates, without damaging the substrate while curing the coating. The composition comprises a glycidyl methacrylate resin, 1,3,5-tris-(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate, a catalyst and, optionally, a second curing agent selected from the group consisting of difunctional and trifunctional carboxylic acids. The composition according to the present invention provides a fine texture finish without the need to add texturizing agents. The composition may be cured at temperatures below 300&deg; F. so as to not damage the heat sensitive substrate.

Fine textured powder coatings for wood substrates

A powder coating composition and method of applying it to a substrate, such as medium density fibreboard, consisting of a glycidyl methacrylate resin, a dicarboxylic acid cross-linking agent, a catalyst selected from phosphines, phosphonium, ammonium 2-phenyl-2-imidazoline, substituted imidazoline and isopropyl imidazole Bis-A epoxy resin adduct and a matte texturing agent. The inventive formulation is able to create a matte texture finish on the surface of the substrate. Since the cured final coating is resistant to yellowing and moisture, it is of great utility in the kitchen cabinet making industry.

Matte finish powder

A coating powder, based on glycidyl (meth)acrylate copolymer/carboxylic acid functional polyester chemistry, provides a smooth, weatherable, reduced gloss coating for use on heat sensitive substrates, such as wood. The glycidyl (meth)acrylate copolymer has an epoxy equivalent weight of 250 to 400 and the carboxylic acid functional polyester has a viscosity of 2500 cps or less at 200 C.

Low temperature curing powder coating for producing reduced gloss, weatherable coatings

Method for on-mold surface coating fiberglass-reinforced molded articles during their manufacture with environmentally friendly and physiologically safe thermosetting unsaturated polyester on-mold coating powders which serve as replacements for liquid gel coats. The thermosetting coating powders employed are adapted to cure at low temperatures to avoid causing thermal damage to the heat sensitive plastic molds which must be reused over and over again, and to cure in the presence of atmospheric oxygen to enable over coating with liquid fill resins and fiberglass, which constitute the bulk of the finished article, without having the fill resins bleed through the powder coating film and detrimentally affect the overall quality of the surface finish.

Method for on-mold coating molded articles with a coating powder as a liquid gel coat replacement

An atomized fluid, such as a mist of water, is applied to a preheated substrate, such as wood, a wood product, paper, or ceramic just prior to or contemporaneously with electrostatically applying a coating powder to the substrate. The atomized fluid is absorbed or adsorbed by the substrate so as to enhance the charge-carrying capacity of the substrate to an extent necessary to promote efficient electrostatic application of the coating powder to the substrate.

Method of applying a coating powder to a substrate

Low temperature curable unsaturated polyester powder coatings suited for heat sensitive substrates with improved surface cure through incorporation of active hydrogen groups into the unsaturated polyester molecule. The unsaturated polyesters containing active hydrogens are derived from ethylenically unsaturated polyfunctional carboxylic acids and active hydrogen containing polyols. Full cure on the surface is obtained without the need for polyethylene waxes or oxygen-reactive curative resins that are commonly employed in order to prevent atmospheric oxygen from inhibiting the free-radical induced cure at the surface of the coating.

Unsaturated polyester powder coatings with improved surface cure

In a coating powder composition comprising A) a polyester resin having carboxyl functionality so as to provide an acid number of between about 15 and about 100, plus B) epoxy curative at a stoichiometric equivalent relative to said polyester resin of between about 0.7 and about 1.3, blooming in the cured coating resulting therefrom is reduced or eliminated by incorporating within the polyester resin A) the monomer 2-butyl, 2-ethyl, 1,3-propane diol (BEPD) at a level to provide between 2 and 25 mole percent of the hydroxyl functionality relative to total hydroxyl functionality of hydroxyl-functional monomers forming the polyester resin.
