Disclosed are random copolymers derived from ethylene and at least two different alkyl acrylate comonomers, with or without an acid cure site-containing comonomer. In particular, disclosed are copolymers derived from copolymerization of (a) from 10 to 50 weight % of ethylene; (b) from 5 to 55 weight % of a first alkyl acrylate; (b) from 15 to 80 weight % of a second alkyl acrylate; and (d) from 0 to 7 weight % of a monoalkyl ester of 1,4-butene-dioic acid. Such copolymers exhibit lower glass transition temperatures (Tg) relative to previous ethylene copolymers comprising a single alkyl acrylate comonomer and maintain the good heat and fluid resistance when employed to produce cured elastomeric compositions as well as the improved low temperature properties. This invention also provides compounded compositions comprising these copolymers, and cured compositions (i.e., vulcanizates) as well as rubber articles formed from these compounded compositions, such as hoses, dampers, seals, gaskets, constant velocity joint (CVJ) boots and shaft boots.

Random ethylene/alkyl acrylate copolymers, compounds and elastomeric compositions thereof with improved low temperature properties

A composition that can be used as catalyst in esterification, transesterification or polycondensation is disclosed, which comprises a stable solution comprising (a) titanium in the form of a titanium &#x3b1;-hydroxycarboxylic acid or its salt, (b) a C&#x2013;Ccarboxylic acid, and (c) zinc in the form of a water-soluble zinc salt, and (d) water; and substantially free of an alkanolamine, an aminocarboxylic acid, or combinations two or more thereof. Also disclosed is an esterification, transesterification or polycondensation process, which comprises contacting, in the presence of the solution composition, an organic acid or its ester or its salt with an alcohol, optionally in the presence of a phosphorus compound, an organic or inorganic toning agent such as cobalt acetate, or combinations thereof.

Stable aqueous solutions comprising titanium and zinc and process therewith

An improved method of making an ethylene acrylate (AEM) elastomer or a polyacrylate (ACM) elastomer wherein an aqueous solution of hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) is employed as the curative agent rather than hexamethylene diamine carbamate (HMDAC). The HMDA reacts with the curative-site monomer derived from the monoalkyl ester of a 1,4-butene-dioic acid in the presence of water, producing (i.e., after press-curing and any secondary heat-curing) a crosslinked elastomer with properties essentially indistinguishable from that produced using HMDAC as the curative agent. Advantageously, the aqueous solution of HMDA can be blended directly into the compound or it can be deposited on an additive such as silica or carbon black prior to blending. Elastomers produced by the improved method according to the present invention are particularly useful in automotive applications requiring oil resistant compositions.

Method of manufacturing cured ethylene acrylic and polyacrylate elastomers

A process that can be used as catalyst in esterification, transesterification or polycondensation is disclosed, which comprises a stable solution comprising (a) titanium in the form of a titanium &#x3b1;-hydroxycarboxylic acid or its salt, (b) a C-Ccarboxylic acid, and (c) zinc in the form of a water-soluble zinc salt, and (d) water. Also disclosed is an esterification, transesterification or polycondensation process, which comprises contacting, in the presence of the solution process, an organic acid or its ester or its salt with an alcohol, optionally in the presence of a phosphorus compound, an organic or inorganic toning agent such as cobalt acetate, or combinations thereof. The process can also comprise combining aqueous solutions of a titanium &#x3b1;-hydroxycarboxylic acid or its salt and a zinc salt in an alcohol to produce an alcohol solution contacting the alcohol solution with a mixture comprising organic acid or its ester or its salt and a second alcohol, or comprise combining an aqueous solutions of a titanium &#x3b1;-hydroxycarboxylic acid or its salt and aqueous solution of a zinc salt with the mixture.

A catalyst composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a titanium compound, a solubility promoter, a phosphorus source, a solvent, and optionally a sulfonic acid, a cocatalyst, or both. A catalyst composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a titanium compound, a phosphorus compound, an amine, a solvent and optionally a cocatalyst in which the phosphorus compound has a formula selected from the group consisting of (R.sup.1 O).sub.x (PO)(OH).sub.3-x, (R.sup.1 O).sub.y (P.sub.2 O.sub.3)(OH).sub.4-y, and combinations thereof; the amine is a tertiary amine; each R.sup.1 is independently a linear or branched alkyl radical containing from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per radical; x is 1 or 2; and y is 1, 2, or 3; and the cocatalyst can be a cobalt/aluminum catalyst, an antimony compound, or combinations thereof. Also disclosed is a process for producing the composition. The process comprises combining a titanium compound, a phosphorus compound, a solvent, an amine, a solvent, and optionally a cocatalyst. The phosphorus compound, amie, and solvent are the same as those disclosed above. Further disclosed is a process for using the composition which comprises contacting a carbonyl compound, in the presence of the composition, with an alcohol under a condition suitable for esterification, transesterification, polymerization, or combinations thereof.

A hot-melt adhesive for use as a shoe last adhesive, particularly one in a form for use in a direct through feed adhesive dispensing system, made from a melt-blend of a copolymer of ethylene and carboxylic acid, a synthetic wax such as a Fischer-Tropsch wax, and an ethylene/unsaturated carboxylic acid wax having a melt index of at least about 5000 dg/min.

Shoe lasting adhesive

Acrylic compositions filled with alumina trihydrate with the mixed ester reaction product of propylene glycol methacrylate and phosphorus pentoxide have superior mechanical properties and ease of manufacture. In such acrylic compositions, the ester reaction product imparts superior properties by acting as a very effective coupling agent between the alumina trihydrate filler and the acrylic matrix.

Copolymers of ethylene with such monomers as an alkyl acrylate and carbon monoxide or with vinyl acetate alone are blended with a thermoplastic block-polyester elastomer and a tackifier to produce thermally stable, hot-melt adhesive compositions which adhere well to polyvinyl chloride and which retain adhesivity at elevated temperatures. Allyl end-capped propylene terephthalate polyester oligomers are sulfonated in an aqueous system in the presence of a free radical initiator by a process in which only a part (about 15% to 40%) of the source of bisulfite is added at the start of the sulfonation step with the remainder being added later in that step, in such increments as will permit maintaining a clear single phase, to give sulfinate-containing sulfonated products, following which the sulfinate content is oxidized to give sulfonated end-capped propylene terephthalate polyester oligomers.

Oil field chemicals are incorporated in polymeric particles of the condensation product of hydroxyacetic acid or the co-condensation product of hydroxyacetic acid and other compounds containing hydroxy-, carboxylic acid-, or hydroxycarboxylic acid moieties. The particles are introduced into an oil well bore and/or subterranean oil formation where the polymeric particles dissolve over a period of time and release the oil field chemicals.

A melted polymer of hydroxyacetic acid with itself or with other hydroxy-, carboxylic acid-, or hydroxycarboxylic acid-containing moieties is subjected to high shear and injected into an organic liquid which is inert to the polymer to form an organic liquid dispersion of very fine polymer particles. In one aspect the melted polymer is combined with the organic liquid and the combination is thereafter subjected to high shear to form the fine particle polymer dispersion. A dispersion agent may also be used to aid in dispersing the particles. The dispersion is used for fluid loss control and gel breaking in subterranean formations.

Process for the preparation of fluid loss additive and gel breaker

Hydroxyacetic acid condensation product is used as a fluid loss material in a well completion or workover process in which a fluid comprising a hydrolyzable aqueous gel is used. The hydroxyacetic acid condensation product degrades at formation conditions to provide hydroxyacetic acid which breaks the aqueous gel, thereby restoring full formation permeability without the need for separate addition of gel breaker.
