Cyclic ethers are prepared by reacting an unsaturated olefin oligomer derived from an alpha-olefin monomer containing from about 6 to 20 carbon atoms with an aldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst.

Preparation of cyclic ethers

An additive for improving the antioxidation properties of lubricating oil is made by reacting a sulfur halide selected from sulfur monochloride or sulfur dichloride with an aliphatic monoolefin (e.g. isobutene) to form an adduct, reacting the adduct thus formed with an alkali metal salt of an organocarbamodithioic acid in an aqueous alkanol medium and recovering the reaction product. When added to lubricating oil, the additive products of the invention improve the antioxidation properties of the lubricating oil.

Sulfurized olefins are produced by reacting sulfur monochloride with a monoolefin (e.g. isobutene) in the presence of minor amounts of an active Lewis acid (e.g. ferric chloride) to form an adduct, reacting the adduct with sulfur and sodium sulfide in an aqueous alkanol made at a ratio of 0.02-0.4 gram atom of sulfur per gram mole of sodium sulfide and then recovering the reaction product. Olefin polysulfides obtained by this method are soluble in both mineral and synthetic lubricating oils (including those of the polyalphaolefin type) and are usable as extreme pressure additives when incorporated into such lubricating oils.

Coking in and around the injector nozzles of indirect injection compression ignition engines is reduced by means of distillate fuel with which has been blended suitable concentrations of (i) organic nitrate ignition accelerator, and (ii) a carboxylic acid ester. Also described are additive mixtures of (i) and (ii) for use in distillate fuels in amounts sufficient to reduce the coking tendencies of such fuels when used in the operation of indirect injection compression ignition engines.

Fuel compositions

An asphaltic composition of enhanced utility for vehicular pavement is described. It comprises a road paving grade of asphalt in admixture with a small amount of an alkylene dithiocarbamate such as methylene bis(dibutyldithiocarbamate) characterized by having a reduced increase in absolute viscosity to original absolute viscosity after thin film aging as measured by ASTM Test D 1754 at 140.degree. F. Such compositions exhibit enhanced resistance to oxidative degradation of the type normally experienced by road paving grades of asphalt.

Asphaltic compositions

Coking in and around the injector nozzles of indirect injection compression ignition engines is reduced by means of distillate fuel with which has been blended suitable concentrations of (i) organic nitrate ignition accelerator, and (ii) a sterically hindered 4,4'-thiobis phenol. Also described are additive mixtures of (i) and (ii) for use in distillate fuels in amounts sufficient to reduce the coking tendencies of such fuels when used in the operation of indirect injection compression ignition engines.

Coking in and around the injector nozzles of indirect injection compression ignition engines is reduced by means of distillate fuel with which has been blended suitable concentrations of (i) organic nitrate ignition accelerator, and (ii) an additive selected from the group consisting of fuel-soluble aliphatic hydrocarbon-substituted succinimide, succinamide and mixtures thereof. The aliphatic hydrocarbon group contains about 12-36 carbon atoms and is derived from an isomerized straight chain .alpha.-olefin. Also described are additive mixtures of (i) and (ii) for use in distillate fuels in amounts sufficient to reduce the coking tendencies of such fuels when used in the operation of indirect injection compression ignition engines.

Also described are additive mixtures of (i) and (ii) for use in distillate fuels in amounts sufficient to reduce the coking tendencies of such fuels when used in the operation of indirect injection compression ignition engines.

Coking in and around the injector nozzles of indirect injection compression ignition engines is reduced by means of distillate fuel with which has been blended suitable concentrations of (i) organic nitrate ignition accelerator, and (ii) 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tri(3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)benzene. Also described are additive mixtures of (i) and (ii) for use in distillate fuels in amounts sufficient to reduce the coking tendencies of such fuels when used in the operation of indirect injection compression ignition engines.
