A UPnP rendezvous bridge appropriately bridges a UPnP network with a rendezvous network. The UPnP rendezvous bridge appropriately allows device and service discovery and converts communications directed between devices within the UPnP network and devices within the rendezvous network into an appropriate format for the receiving device, utilizing a UPnP proxy, a rendezvous proxy, a UPnP table and a rendezvous table. The UPnP rendezvous bridge includes a programmable microprocessor which manipulates communications into the proper format for the receiving device. The UPnP rendezvous bridge is implemented within a stand-alone device coupled between the UPnP and the rendezvous networks. Alternatively, the UPnP rendezvous bridge is implemented within an appropriately configured device in one of the networks. A protocol conversion program is stored within a read only memory (ROM) and used by the microprocessor to perform the appropriate conversions. Alternatively, the programmable microprocessor is programmed for the appropriate conversions by a device coupled to the UPnP rendezvous bridge.

In one embodiment, the request event manager maintains a database of home network services, and allows the home network services to be scheduled for execution over time. Home network services herein refer to high-level abstractions of a consumer electronic device's functionalities, and also content that is available from the consumer electronic device. The request event manager of the present invention also creates and maintains a service request list (SRL) which details the service actions in a hierarchical fashion. By maintaining a database of home network services, the request event manager of the present invention allows user applications to specify and schedule concatenated or hierarchical events such that different network activity across interconnected heterogeneous consumer electronic devices can be synchronized without requiring complicated logic to be implemented. The request event manager of the present invention may be implemented as part of a middleware infrastructure for a home network, and may reside within a home server.

A method of managing resources within a network for consumer electronic media devices. In one embodiment, the method is implemented as a software resource manager which provides a centralized resource allocation, reservation and access control functionalities for a home entertainment server. Particularly, user applications of the home server receive instructions from a user or other entities for a media service, and converts the instructions into a request that identifies the necessary resources for providing the media service. The software resource manager then determines whether such resources are available upon receiving the request. Importantly, the software resource manager also determines whether a routing path between the necessary resources has sufficient bandwidth for performing the requested media service. If necessary resources and bandwidth are available, the software resource manager then sends control signals to the source and destination devices causing them to perform the requested media services. Additionally, the software resource manager of the present invention provides event scheduling and request arbitration functionalities to the home entertainment server. In this manner, a secure home entertainment network that is protected from misuse and abuse can thus be achieved.
