A thermally conducting reflector is employed to serve as dual-use thermal conductor and light reflector for collimating a multi-chip LED array. The thermally conducting reflector consists of a heat sink, item, a reflector made of a thermally conducting and optically reflective material such as aluminum, item, a transparent cover, item, and lamp base that is electrically isolating, item and a common lighting electrical connector, item, illustrated as an Edison type screw base. The novelty in the present invention is how the items are structured to work together to dissipate heat.

High efficiency optical collimator utilizing an open central light flow feature reduces losses while maintaining high intensity. Many degrees of collimation are possible including wide beam angles which traditionally exhibit high back-reflection losses.

Traditional incandescent and halogen lamps produce a high CRI warm white light with indirect emission patterns at the cost of poor energy efficiency. This new advancement in solid-state lighting enables the production of a new solid-state filament wherein the tungsten filament is replaced with an array of high efficiency LED emitters which combine through an equiangular spiral, or t-spline/TNURCC lightpipe network to produce a single homogeneous blue light source which then pumps a luminescent filament comprised of a phosphor loaded silicone, phosphor loaded polymer, a lanthanide doped fluoro-phosphate glass, glass ceramic tape, quantum dot filled composite, or super-continuum spectrum producing photonic crystalline structure.

The present invention provides a multicolor LED assembly packaged with improved and controlled color mixing to create a more uniform color mixture. The assembly includes at least one lens overlying an encapsulant which encapsulates a plurality of LED dies. The lens includes a top surface and a bottom surface with the contour of the bottom surface designed to redirect light from each of the LED dies in different directions towards the top surface of the lens. The contoured shaped of the bottom surface of the lens redirects light from each of the plurality of LED dies such that illuminance and luminous intensity distributions of the plurality of LED dies substantially overlap, wherein the deviation from complete overlap is less than a predetermined amount which is substantially imperceptible to the average human eye.

Optical devices for controlled color mixing

Multiple-tier omnidirectional solid-state emission source capable of dispersing light in flexible distributions or custom-intensity distributions which throw more light forward, to the side alternatively, or in all directions. This optical light control requires multiple-surface manipulation of the directions of the light energy bundles emerging from solid-state light sources. Producing uniform light up to 325 degrees in the vertical direction through the combined implementation of multi-stage light guiding for remote source elongation and multiple-tiers of TIR, refraction, and scatter for remote source emission and control. Combining the efficient light production of an LED chip with that of a directly coupled optic results in high efficiency custom distribution to direct light where required. The optical light manipulator consists of a dielectric or reflector collector section, spline light-pipe section used to clear the cross-sectional area of a thermal dissipation device and a section which either externally, internally, or combinatorially feeds multiple-tier TIR/refractor elements.

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a compact optical assembly which improves collimation of light produced by multiple LED light sources in a light engine. A shaped primary reflector located over the light engine reflects the light toward a larger shaped secondary reflector. The shapes of the reflectors are selected to cooperatively produce a highly collimated light beam. Color mixing may be improved by providing a plurality of facets on the reflective surfaces of at least one of the primary reflector or the secondary reflector.

One embodiment of the present technology provides a the method comprises the steps of: Converting B-spline networks to T-splines, Converting NURBS into T-spline surfaces, Adding control points to local regions, Scaling or optimizing weights across the mesh, and merging between NURBS and T-spline surfaces. The technology overcame some of the issues with implementing simultaneous multiple surface design methodology when dealing with groups of lenses and reflectors, by improving seed patch junction continuity, elimination of ripples and holes, and precisely adding control points where required. In at least one embodiment of the technology, the t-splines topology allowed for refined control over the optical surface. Control points were reduced by conversion of a NURBS into a T-spline. T-splines were used to produce new loft lenses which were further refined and merged to spline patches. In another embodiment of the present technology, the T-spline loft lens network was subsequently optimized through reverse raytracing, bi-directional raytracing, flow-line, optical path, or flux tube approach.

The present invention relates to warm white light engines including combinations of blue, cyan, and red, red-orange, or amber emitters and one or more phosphors that produce a white light pleasing to the human eye through the use of improved color uniformity and improved collimation of light. Specifically, a micro-lenslet array having an optimized surface is used to disperse light from the light emitter; an innercollimation lens having an optimized cross-sectional shape and micro-ridges is used to disperse light; a TIR reflector having an optimized cross-sectional shape and micro-ridges is used to disperse and redistribute phase as well as provide collimation; and a final micro-lenslet layer includes optimized lenslet design placement and randomization factor to homogenize light to produce a uniform warm white light.

The system includes a plurality of LEDs wherein the LEDs have at least a first and second characteristic wavelength, and a mixed phosphor layer overlying at least one of a portion of the plurality of LEDs, the phosphor layer absorbing at least a portion of the LED-emitted light and producing phosphor-emitted light, wherein the phosphors includes a third characteristic wavelength and a fourth characteristic wavelength, wherein the third characteristic wavelength and fourth characteristic wavelength are not the same.

This invention relates to optical devices. More specifically, the present invention relates to a collimated optical light source assembly that produces a uniform white light. Specifically, light from a multi-cavity RGB LED array is dispersed in a reflecting cavity having a Lambertian texture on the interior surface. The light is then emitted though a lenslet array and a cone lens which together further disperses the light emitted by the individual LEDs. The dispersed light is then collimated by a reflector.

A display backlight assembly providing improved optical coupling between a solid state light source and a display optical light guide. The assembly includes an optical coupler to couple the solid state light source and display optical light guide together. In addition, the optical coupler may include a light mixing element for improved mixing of the multi-colored or mono-chromatic light produced by the solid state light source.
