A two-step process for the preparation of secondary amines in good yield from olefins, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and primary amines is described. The intermediate imine may be isolated in good yield as well.

Preparation of disecondary amines from diolefins and primary amines

This invention is directed to novel catalysts characterized as compounds of tin or zinc containing a direct metal-nitrogen bond. The novel catalysts are derived from a primary or secondary amine such as an alkyl amine, a heterocyclic amine, an aromatic amine, etc. The amine is reacted with a tin compound such as a tin chloride, a tin bromide, a tin oxide, or a tin alkoxide. Alternatively, the amine may be reacted with a zinc halide, a zinc alkoxide or an organozinc compound. In another aspect of the present invention, the novel catalysts are used to catalyze the reaction of an acrylate or methacrylate ester with an amine in order to prepare N-substituted acrylamides or methacrylamides in good yield and with high selectivity.

An aminomethylation reaction is disclosed wherein polymeric polyamines are produced. Polymeric polyolefins such as polybutadiene, secondary amines, and synthesis gas are reacted in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a ruthenium-containing compound, a rhodium-containing compound, a sterically hindered phosphine and a solvent. Preferred polybutadiene feedstocks are those with a predominance of internal rather than pendant vinylic olefin groups and particularly those polymers containing both the 1,2-polybutadiene and 1,4-polybutadiene units.

Water soluble thickeners made by alkoxylating monohydric alcohol hydrophobes are described. The monohydric alcohol should have at least 18 carbon atoms to be properly hydrophobic. In addition, a large proportion of ethylene oxide must be added, such that the molar ratio of ethylene oxide to monohydric alcohol hydrophobe is at least 40:1. Improved results are obtained if 8-15 moles of propylene oxide are added as a block to the single mole of hydrophobe first. The alkoxylations are necessary to provide the desired viscosities and hydrophilic nature. These thickeners are particularly useful in the glycol-water based fluids of this invention.

The N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)methacrylamide is not removed from the reaction mixture until the pyrolysis reaction is completed.

A method for the separation of primary amines such as bis-(2-aminoethyl)ether from tertiary amines such as N-(2-methoxyethyl)morpholine which have close boiling points via extraction using a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent is described. Alternatively, a polyhydroxylic compound or a mixture of such compounds may be added to a stream containing both bis-(2-aminoethyl)ether and N-(2-methoxyethyl)morpholine before extraction with the non-polar hydrocarbon is performed. The N-(2-methoxyethyl)morpholine is selectively removed by the hydrocarbon.

A method for the separation of primary amines such as bis-(2-aminoethyl)ether from tertiary amines such as N-(2-methoxyethyl)morpholine which have close boiling points via extraction using a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent and water is described. The water may be added to a stream containing both bis-(2-aminoethyl)ether and N-(2-methoxyethyl)morpholine before extraction with the non-polar hydrocarbon is performed. The N-(2-methoxyethyl)morpholine is selectively removed by the hydrocarbon.

The catalyst includes molybdenum and/or tungsten and an inorganic metal phosphate and/or arsenate wherein at least the inorganic metal phosphate and/or arsenate is substantially insoluble in the olefin hydroperoxide reaction mixture. The metal portion of the inorganic metal phosphate and/or arsenate is one or more metals selected from the group consisting of the metals found in Groups I to III, VIIb and VIII, of the Periodic Table of Elements. Preferred metals include aluminum, iron, zinc and mixtures of these metals.
