A system and a method of operating the system for non-disruptively inserting a node into the operations of an ATM ring uses the ring operations to update topology information and routing tables at the existing nodes to include therein the new node and one or more virtual paths associated with the new node. Basically, the node to be inserted establishes communications with a ring hub node over an established intra-ring management channel. The node and the ring hub node then exchange information over the management channel and the node performs its initializing routines in order that the node may operate to pass through traffic on the existing virtual paths. The new node next requests from the hub node the assignment of one or more virtual paths for directing traffic between that node and other nodes on the network. In response to the request, the hub node assigns one or more virtual paths to the requesting node and establishes a signaling channel to the node over one of the virtual paths. The hub node also notifies the other nodes of the assignment, and downloads to the new node routing tables that include the established connections over the existing virtual paths. The node may then participate in traffic shaping on existing virtual circuits, and also in call set up and call tear down operations over its assigned virtual paths in the same manner as the other nodes on the ring. A failed, or otherwise inoperative, node is removed from the ring without disrupting the traffic on the ring by essentially reversing the node insertion operations. After learning of the node failure, the hub node instructs the operative nodes to tear down the virtual path and associated virtual circuits that originate from or end at the failed node. Thereafter, the hub node directs the nodes to update their ring topology information to remove the failed node. In the meantime, the nodes continue to maintain the other virtual path and virtual circuit connections over the ring without disruption. When the failed node is later re-booted, the system follows the steps discussed above to re-insert the node, without disrupting the traffic on the ring.

A method of permanently surgically treating glaucoma is disclosed together with an apparatus for effecting such treatment. In accordance with the method, an implant is disposed at a filtration site through the sclera the implant including a through going aperture leading from the anterior chamber to a bleb formed in the conjunctiva. The implant is retained in the sclera by radially compressing the same during the insertion procedure and thereafter releasing the radial compressive forces whereby the implant expands and is prevented from dislocation. An apparatus for effecting the implant is likewise disclosed, the apparatus including a cannula having a bore constraining the insert, a plunger for shifting the insert through an angularly offset opening in the cannula and a retainer filament engaged in the passage in the insert for controlling the precise location of the insert during the implant and for releasing the insert from connection to the cannula when the precise position is achieved.

A modification of a hypodermic syringe shielding the needle from user so that inadvertant puncture to the user of syringe will not occur before, during or after the injection of subject. This modification removes the necessity for capping or recapping the syringe. It is an improvement over prior devices in that the hypodermic needle is moved out of shield with out pressure of the syringe on subject being injected allowing for full view of needle during injection making venipuncture possible. The needle retracts automatically back in shield with release of pressure on shield handle (5) and syringe handle (7) by means of spring (2). Gasket (3) prevents movement of needle in shield by unintentional forces, and the plunger rod handle operates independently of retracting or protracting needle allowing for filling of syringe, aspiration of syringe and injecting with syringe. This device allows the safe use of a medical hypodermic syringe with out fear of contracting diseases the subject being injected may have by inadvertant puncture of user afer injecting subject. It also gives operator full visability of needle, control of needle and indendent action of exposing and needle and injecting with syringe or withdrawing blood of patient through springe.
