Novel reverse osmosis membranes and a method for preparing such membranes are described. A substrate can be coated with a first compound bearing a plurality of onium groups and a second compound bearing a plurality of nucleophilic groups. The resulting coating cures readily upon exposure to actinic radiation.

Novel photocurable, adherent coating compositions and a method for preparing such compositions are described. A substrate can be coated with a first compound bearing a plurality of onium groups and a second compound bearing a plurality of nucleophilic groups. The resulting coating cures readily upon exposure to actinic radiation. These compositions can be used in preparation of photoresists, composite membranes, and modifying surfaces either for accepting adhesives or releasing oily soil.

A process is disclosed for the preparation of alkyl cyanates, alkyl isocyanurates, multifunctional alkyl cyanates, and oligomers of multifunctional alkyl isocyanates by reacting cyanogen halide with the corresponding thallium(I) salt of an alkanol at reduced temperatures, optionally in the presence of an inert solvent. Subsequently, warming the resulting product to ambient temperature causes isomerization to the corresponding aliphatic isocyanate and ultimately oligomerization to form trialkyl isocyanurate or oligomers of multifunctional alkyl isocyanates.
