A blower assembly suitable for use in a vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system includes a motor and a fan. The motor is configured to define an exit region where air that flows through the motor exits the motor. The centrifugal fan is configured to attach to a shaft of the motor. The fan defines a plurality of passageways configured to allow the air from the motor to pass through the fan. The passageways are configured to minimize noise caused by the air drawn through the motor.

A heat exchanger includes a header, a plurality of tubes, and a distributor. The header is configured to define an inlet for the heat exchanger. The tubes extend away from and are fluidicly coupled to the header. The distributor is located within the header and is configured to distribute refrigerant flowing along a longitudinal axis from the inlet to the tubes via a plurality of openings defined by the distributor through a wall of the distributor. The openings include a first opening configured to direct refrigerant in a first direction, and a second opening configured to direct refrigerant in a second direction. The first direction and the second direction are selected such that refrigerant emitted from the first opening and the second opening substantially intersect each other.

Heat exchanger distributor with intersecting streams

A heating, ventilation and air conditioning system includes a housing presenting an opening defining a rim surrounding a motor. A plurality of supports extend from the motor and a plurality of posts extend axially between a first end and a second end and interconnect the supports and the housing. The first ends of each post are supported by one of the supports and the second ends are supported by the housing with each of the posts being flexible for allowing for bending of the posts between the first end and the second end to allow for movement of the motor relative to the housing. In one embodiment, the first ends are upper ends and the second ends are lower ends and the housing includes an extension extending downwardly and a ledge extending radially inwardly. In another embodiment, the first ends are lower ends and the second ends are upper ends integral with the rim.

Integrally molded motor isolation system

The invention provides for a motor attachment assembly that includes an electric motor having spring clips adapted to securely lock onto the isolation posts of a plastic post vibration isolation system. The motor includes an end cap that has notches which cooperate with locator tabs of the motor housing to lock the cap onto the housing with the spring clips therebetween. Each clip includes an axial slot that is expandable in an open direction to receive an isolation post and biased in the closed direction to retain the isolation post. Each clip also has an inner surface with barbs protruding into the channel to allow insertion of the isolation post into the channel in the direction of the output shaft and to resist movement of the isolation post in a direction opposite to the output shaft. The inner surface has a retention groove to receive plastically deformed portions of the isolation post.

Motor attachment assembly for plastic post isolation system

The invention provides a press in style motor attachment mount assembly. The assembly includes a motor and a vibration isolator. The motor has an end portion axially remote from the output end and a stop facing the output end. The vibration isolator includes a cup that axially receives the end portion of the motor. The cup includes an end wall, a sidewall, and flexible fingers integrally connected to the sidewall. The flexible fingers have a flexed position in which the tip of the flexible finger is disposed radially outwardly to allow axial assembly of the end portion of the motor into the cup and a locking position where the tip engages the first radial stop to prevent axial detachment of the motor from the cup.

Pressed in style motor attachment

An automotive heat, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system including an electrical control module for controlling the motor of the system. The module includes a connector base supporting a circuit board having spaced side edges extending into the housing. The circuit board having a first leg extending from the base and through a curved section and into a second leg to a distal end spaced from the base with an electrical circuit extending over the exterior of the first leg and over the curved section and over the second leg. The circuit board includes an offset section between the base and the first leg for centralizing the legs on the base.

Compact circuit board for an automotive HVAC system

The invention provides an electric motor assembly having an electric motor with a first end and a second end spaced from the first end. The electric motor also includes a motor shaft extending along a first axis between a first tip cantilevered from the second end and a second tip spaced from the first tip along the first axis. The electric motor assembly also includes a worm gear disposed on the motor shaft between the second end and the first tip for rotation with the motor shaft about the first axis. The electric motor assembly also includes a housing having an internal surface with a first portion correspondingly shaped with respect to the first end to locate the electric motor in the housing. The housing also includes a second portion disposed along the first axis spaced from the first tip. The electric motor assembly also includes a first thrust bearing disposed between the first tip and the second portion. The first thrust bearing limits movement of the motor shaft along the first axis in a first axial direction.

Method to increase actuator torque

A heating and air-conditioning (HVAC) module for an automotive vehicle wherein the electric motor for the blower includes a double walled motor housing for noise abatement. The housing defines a cup-shaped inner casing with an open end and a closed end. An outer casing surrounds and is integrally connected to the inner casing by an integral flange. The outer casing extends upwardly from the flange to a rim to define a space surrounding the inner casing. An end cap includes a groove to engage the rim and extends over and in spaced relationship to the closed end of the inner casing. The end cap is held in place by fasteners threadedly engaging posts extending upwardly from the flange, with one of the posts extending upwardly from a female electrical connector that extends radially between the outer casing and the inner casing for supplying electrical power to the motor.

Integrally molded sound housing for blower motor

A casing for a HVAC system in an automobile for moving air comprises a plurality of sections, each of which is molded of plastic material. The sections of the casing are connected and sealed to one another at a plurality of joints. The improvement resides in the tongue having a slot extending into the distal end thereof for splitting the tongue into first and second forks in frictional engagement with the side-walls of the groove. The forks are compressed together by the groove to narrow the slot from top to bottom to retain the tongue in the groove and to seal the sections together.

Integrally molded lateral compression seal

A multi-function condenser for an air conditioning system includes a first header, a second header, a plurality of tubes, and a conduit. The tubes extend in parallel relationship between the headers for establishing fluid communication between the first header and the second header. The second header includes a header portion and a receiver portion. A conduit extends into and out of and is surrounded by the receiver portion to define a space between the conduit and the receiver portion. Heat is transferred between hot refrigerant flowing in the receiver portion, the header portion, and cooler refrigerant flowing through the conduit as the refrigerant flows through the conduit independently of the refrigerant flowing in the space and in the header portion to increase an overall efficiency of the air conditioning system.

Multi-function condenser

A concentric tubing apparatus prevents heat gain in an air conditioning system. The heat gain results from heat generated in an engine compartment of a vehicle. To accomplish this, the tubing apparatus includes a first and second refrigerant tubes. The first refrigerant tube is in fluid communication with a receiver and an evaporator of the air conditioning system to accommodate the flow of the refrigerant from the receiver to the evaporator, and the second refrigerant tube is in fluid communication with the receiver and the evaporator to accommodate the flow of the refrigerant from the evaporator to the receiver. The second refrigerant tube is disposed concentrically about the first refrigerant tube such that the second refrigerant tube insulates the refrigerant flowing in the first refrigerant tube from the heat generated in the engine compartment. Thus, heat gain in the refrigerant flowing in the first refrigerant tube to the evaporator is prevented.

Air conditioning system and tubing apparatus to prevent heat gain due to engine compartment heat

A multi-function receiver attenuates pressure fluctuations of refrigerant flowing from an evaporator to a compressor in an air conditioning system. The receiver includes a body housing having an inlet for receiving the refrigerant from a condenser and an outlet for sending the refrigerant to the compressor. A cap housing covers the body housing. The receiver also includes first and second ports defined within the cap housing. The first port communicates with the evaporator for sending the refrigerant to the evaporator, and the second port communicates with the evaporator for receiving the refrigerant from the evaporator. An internal wall defines an outer and an inner cavity. The outer cavity communicates with the inlet for receiving the refrigerant from the condenser and with the first port for sending the refrigerant to the evaporator. The inner cavity communicates with the second port to receive the refrigerant from the evaporator and to attenuate the pressure fluctuations. The inner cavity also communicates with the outlet for sending the refrigerant to the compressor after the pressure fluctuations have been attenuated.

Multi-function receiver

A thermostatic expansion valve controls a flow of refrigerant. The valve includes a body defining a fluid chamber. A refrigerant inlet is defined within the body. The inlet communicates with the chamber such that the refrigerant can flow through the inlet and into the chamber. First and second outlets are defined within the body. The first outlet communicates with the chamber such that the refrigerant can flow from the chamber to an evaporator during normal and low refrigerant charge. The second outlet communicates with the chamber such that the refrigerant can flow from the chamber to a compressor during low charge. A moveable needle controls the flow of the refrigerant into and out of the body. A notch is defined within the needle such that, during low charge, the refrigerant that flows into the chamber can flow to the second outlet and to the compressor without flowing through the evaporator.

Thermostatic expansion valve and air conditioning system for low refrigerant charge

An automotive A/C compressor has a novel discharge valve design that can be easily installed even though the compressor shell is made up of only two housings, each of which integrates head, cylinder bore and discharge chamber, leaving no access between the integral head and bore. A plurality of cylindrical mounting bosses are molded into the heads, one central to each bore. The plane in which the end of each boss is located can be machined independently from the axially overlapping cylinder bore, which assures an intersection of the two. The discharge valve is sized to fit through the other end of the bore into abutment with the boss, and carries a seal that is likewise assured of sealing contact with the bore.

A/C compressor with integrally molded housings

A microprocessor based control for an automotive air conditioner receives inputs from transducers which measure suction gas pressure and temperature and ambient air temperature and provides outputs for compressor clutch control and instrument panel lights. The control includes a table of warning temperatures and critical temperatures of suction gas for various ranges of ambient temperature. The control is programmed to carry out the process of comparing compressor on times to a threshold and shutting down the compressor when the on times are repeatedly less than the threshold, looking up table values for warning temperature and critical temperature for the current ambient temperature, comparing suction gas temperatures to the table values and shutting down the compressor when the temperature is repeatedly above the critical temperature and giving a warning when the temperature is repeatedly above the warning temperature.
