A process for the formation of pentaerythritol-based phosphorus heterocycles comprises the reaction of a pentaerythritol polyol, e.g., pentaerythritol, with a trivalent or pentavalent phosphorus compounds, e.g., a phosphorus oxytrihalide, a triorganophosphite, or a phosphorus trihalide, in an aryl phosphate solvent at elevated temperature.

Bis(pentaerythritol phosphate) carbonate can be formed by the reaction of pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol and dihydrocarbyl carbonate, such as diphenyl carbonate, preferably in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, such as an imidazole, and in a high boiling organic solvent, e.g., a phosphate ester solvent, which allows for removal of by-product.

Flame retardant polyester compositions are prepared by incorporating into a polymer from 1-20% by weight of a flame retardant having the structural formula: ##STR1## where Ar is aryl and R and R' are independently alkylene. This class of flame retardant shows high temperature stability and permits incorporation of the flame retardant into the polyester by hot milling at temperatures up to about 390.degree. C.

The reaction residue containing diaryl alkylphosphonate resulting from the reaction of triaryl phosphite and alcohol in the presence of a rearrangement catalyst is treated by optionally, and preferably, stripping phenol by-product therefrom, optionally, and then treating the residue with aqueous dilute acid to convert unreacted triaryl phosphite reagent to diaryl phosphite and remove it as an aqueous layer, and then treating the remaining residue with an aqueous base to yield a water phase containing the unwanted diarylphosphite by-product and an organic phase containing the desired diaryl alkylphosphonate, with subsequent removal of the water phase, prior to subsequent distillation of the remaining organic phase residue to remove purified diaryl alkylphosphonate therefrom.

There is disclosed a process for the production of arylsulfonyl halides, e.g., benzenesulfonyl chloride. The disclosed process adds a phosphorus-containing additive, e.g., phosphorous acid, before the reaction of an arylsulfonic acid with a sulfur halide and a halogen. The phosphorus-containing additive reduces the thermal instability of the residue remaining after distillation of the arylsulfonyl halide.

A process is provided for the preparation of diaryl methylphosphonates through the reaction of triaryl phosphites with methanol in the presence of a catalytic quantity of methyl iodide. The reaction is conducted at a temperature of from about 170.degree. C. to about 250.degree. C. New and useful derivatives are produced by reaction of the diaryl methylphosphonates with polyols or amines.

An improved process is disclosed for preparing alkyldiarylphosphines and related compounds. Typically, diphenylphosphinous chloride is reacted in solution with an excess of an alkali metal; and the reaction product reacted with chlorohexane thereby forming hexyldiphenylphosphine. The improved process obtains greater yields, by use of critical amounts of alkali metal; use of a single reactor rather than two reactors; preinitiation of the first stage reaction; reduction of temperatures to increase reaction rate under certain conditions; and preferred reactants and physical form thereof. Novel products include behenyldiphenylphosphine.
