The present specification discloses methods for scanning objects for the presence of lithium batteries. Normalized transmission X-ray data is used to generate organic, effective Z, and attenuation-based images. These images are then segmented using a combination of thresholding and region growing techniques to identify regions of interest. The regions are classified as lithium batteries or other objects, based on characteristics such as area of the region, its organic intensity, Znumber, shape, spatial arrangement and texture.

The present specification discloses systems for a compact and portable X-ray transmission imaging system that is used for security inspection of small items. The system includes a housing with an X-ray tunnel for receiving an article to be inspected, a conveyor for conveying the article through the tunnel, a dual source X-ray system, with a central target, for generating two overlapping cone beams, and a two-dimensional X-ray detector system for detecting the generated dual energy X-rays.

An inspection system for scanning cargo and vehicles is described which employs an X-ray source that includes an electron beam generator, for generating an electron beam; an accelerator for accelerating said electron beam in a first direction; and, a first set of magnetic elements for transporting said electron beam into a magnetic field created by a second set of magnetic elements, wherein the magnetic field created by said second set of magnetic elements causes said electron beam to strike a target such that the target substantially only generates X-rays focused toward a high density section in the scanned object, which is estimated in a second pulse using image data captured by a detector array in a first pulse. The electron beam direction is optimized by said X-ray source during said second pulse to focus X-rays towards said high density section based on said image data in said first pulse.

Low-dose radiographic imaging system

Method and system for analyzing local composition and structure of a compound having one or more non-zero gradients in concentration for one or more selected constituents in a selected direction. A beam of X rays having representative energy E is received by a mono-capillary or poly-capillary device and is directed at a selected small region of the compound. A portion of the X rays is diffracted at the selected region by one or more constituents of the compound, at each of two or more diffraction angles relative to a selected surface or lattice plane(s) of the compound; and the diffracted portion of X rays for each of these diffraction angles is received and analyzed at an X-ray detector. A portion of the X rays excites fluorescence radiation that is received by a fluorescence detector to estimate the relative concentrations in a compound having two or more constituents. Fluorescence X rays and diffraction X rays can be detected at each desired translational position and rotation for a target site. As a result, a concentration map for various constituents in the compound can be prepared, together with a phase map illustrating the structure of a combinatorial compound. An X-ray detector monochromator can be removed and a capillary diameter can be reduced in some situations.
