A method for modeling reservoir souring using object-oriented numerical solutions separate from reservoir topography is described. Specifically, flow physics are separated into one or more objects, along with one or more HS generation mechanisms, for modeling on time and spatial scales separate from field scale modeling.

An electrical isolation, high pressure resistant gasket for API or ANSI seal ring flanges has four combined features. The gasket has two relatively thick, unyielding metal plates electrically separated from each other by an insulating material. The outer face surfaces of the metal plates are grooved for metal seal rings. The inner face surfaces have metal ridges. The insulating material electrically isolates the plates and the strength of the plates and metal ridges prevent distortion of the plates and blowout of the insulation material. Preferably, the metal ridges extend inwardly overlapping each other. The metal plates may be made of dissimilar metals.

Spherically-shaped rolling solids are separated from irregularly-shaped nonrolling solids with an inclined conveyor belt separating system. A dry mixture of the solids is fed onto a section of a continuously upward moving, appropriately inclined conveyor belt. Most of the nonrolling solids eventually move up with the belt and are then moved in a sideways, upward direction or directions off a side of the belt. Most of the rolling solids move down the belt to a preselected area where their movement down and off a side of the conveyor belt is controlled by a combined scraper and gas jet lower control arrangement. The control arrangement has a diagonally placed scraper blade and jets of gas directed longitudinally ahead of the scraper. The control arrangement may also have a side control scraper and side control gas jet. The combined lower control arrangement provides for more efficient utilization of the upper surface area of the conveyor belt while maintaining the desired separation efficiency of the system. This lower control is particularly advantageous for a wide belt divided into two or more distinct separating sections. The initial momentum and direction of movement of the solids feed stream may also be controlled to improve the operation of the solids separating system. The system is especially useful for separating spherical solid heat carriers from spent shale solids in an oil shale retorting facility.

Conveyor belt solids separator with combined scraper and gas jet control

Spherically-shaped rolling solids are separated from irregularly-shaped nonrolling solids with an inclined conveyor belt separating system. A dry mixture of the solids is fed onto a section of a continuously upward moving, appropriately inclined conveyor belt. Most of the nonrolling solids eventually move up with the belt and are then moved in a sideways, upward direction or directions off a side of the belt. Most of the rolling solids move down the belt and are then moved in a sideways, downward direction or directions off a side of the belt. These changes in direction of movment of the rolling and nonrolling solids provide several advantages, including the freeing of trapped solids of the other class so that the freed solids may move up or down the belt as the case may be. The solids feed stream and the direction and rate of flow of the solids of the belt may be additionally controlled. The upper surface of the conveyor belt may also be divided into two or more distinct separating sections. In this manner, the separating efficiency and surface utilization of a continuously restored, conveyor belt separating system is increased, while carry-over or loss of desirable solids is reduced. The separating system is especially useful for separating spherical solid heat carriers from spent shale solids in an oil shale retorting facility.

Method of removing a contaminant, such as arsenic or selenium, from a synthetic hydrocarbonaceous fluid comprising providing a guard bed having a plurality of sections, a first section having from about 10 to about 75 percent of its volume occupied by a contaminant-removing material comprising, alone or on a carrier, either iron, cobalt, nickel, oxides or sulfides of these metals, or combinations thereof; the remainder being inert material. A second section of the guard bed has a major portion of its volume occupied by the contaminant-removing material. The feed oil, in the presence of hydrogen is contacted with the particles in the respective sections of the guard bed.

Method of removing contaminant from a hydrocarbonaceous fluid

What is disclosed is a method for treating a hydrophobic viscous feed, such as a syncrude fraction containing solids, to remove at least a portion of the solids having a minimum syncrude fraction therewith, characterized by a multi-step process. First, water is mixed with the feed to provide two liquid phases in the mixture. The mixture is then subjected to at least one electric field in at least one electrostatic zone to produce a first overflow containing product, such as the syncrude fraction, that is reduced in solids content as compared to the original feed, and an overflow containing water, solids and residual feed. Next, the first underflow is centrifuged to produce a second overflow containing residual feed and water and a second underflow containing primarily solids, with a minor amount of liquids. At least a part of the second overflow is returned to electrostatic zone for recovery of at least part of the residual feed. Also disclosed are improvements in the basic process; including those in which, singly or in combination, a diluent is added; a plurality of electrostatic zones and centrifuging zones are employed; a flashing step is employed; and specific apparatus for carrying out the steps.
