A process for treating an electrostatographic imaging member including providing a hollow cylindrical electrostatographic imaging member having an interior surface, a coated outer surface, a first end and a second end, the interior surface at at least the first end having a coating of adhesive material securing a first end flange to the first end, and propelling solid carbon dioxide pellets against the first end flange and coating of adhesive material with sufficient force to remove the first end flange and coating of adhesive material from the interior surface at at least the first end of the hollow cylindrical electrostatographic imaging member.

Hollow cylindrical imaging member treatment process with solid carbon dioxide pellets

A process for dip coating drums comprising providing a drum having an outer surface to be coated, an upper end and a lower end, providing at least one coating vessel having a bottom, an open top and a cylindrically shaped vertical interior wall having a diameter greater than the diameter of the drum, flowing liquid coating material from the bottom of the vessel to the top of the vessel, immersing the drum in the flowing liquid coating material while maintaining the axis of the drum in a vertical orientation, maintaining the outer surface of the drum in a concentric relationship with the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel while the drum is immersed in the coating material, the outer surface of the drum being radially spaced from the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel, maintaining laminar flow motion of the coating material as it passes between the outer surface of the drum and the vertical interior wall of the vessel, maintaining the radial spacing between the outer surface of the drum and the inner surface of the vessel between about 2 millimeters and about 9 millimeters, and withdrawing the drum from the coating vessel.

Immersion coating process

Apparatus for dip coating comprising a drum having an outer surface to be coated, an upper end and a lower end, at least one coating vessel having a bottom, an open top and a cylindrically shaped vertical interior wall having a diameter greater than the diameter of the drum, an inlet at the bottom of the vessel, the inlet adapted to feed flowing coating fluid into the vessel, a mandrel adapted to maintain the outer surface of the drum in a concentric relationship with the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel while the drum is immersed in the flowing coating material, the outer surface of the drum being radially spaced from the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel, and at least one flow regulating member adapted to maintain laminar flow motion of the coating material as the fluid passes between the outer surface of the drum and the vertical inner wall of the vessel.

Immersion coating apparatus

An electrostatographic imaging member assembly including a hollow electrostatographic imaging drum having a first end and a second end, at least one coating on the drum extending to at least the first end of the drum, the coating having an outer electrostatographic imaging surface and a first drum supporting end cap mounted on the first end of the drum, the first drum supporting end cap including a disk shaped member having an annular skirt encircling an exterior surface of the first end of the cylindrical substrate, the annular skirt having an imaginary axis coextensive with an imaginary axis of the drum. This electrostatographic imaging member assembly may be fabricated by sliding the skirt of the end cap over the end of the drum with or without presoftening of the coating. The electrostatographic imaging member assembly may be utilized in electrostatographic imaging apparatus in which the end caps support electrostatographic imaging apparatus subassembly components.

An apparatus for applying a coating solution to at least a portion of a substrate surface to form a coated surface comprises an arrangement for separating the substrate from the coating solution and an arrangement for creating a flow of gas onto the coated surface in a direction substantially parallel to the coated surface substantially in unison with the separating arrangement separating the substrate from the coating solution.

There are disclosed apparatus and substrate coating methods comprising: (a) positioning a first coupler comprised of a tapered end portion in an opening of a reservoir apparatus to define a reservoir for a coating solution between the surfaces of the first coupler and the reservoir apparatus, wherein the tapered end portion of the first coupler extends below the opening; (b) engaging the bottom end of a vertically disposed, hollow substrate with a first end portion of a second coupler comprised of the first end portion and an opposed, tapered second end portion; (c) moving the top end of the substrate over a part of the tapered end portion of the first coupler to engage the substrate with the first coupler, and moving the first coupler and the substrate through the opening, whereby the coating solution is deposited on the outer surface of the substrate; (d) positioning the second coupler in the opening to define the reservoir, wherein the tapered second end portion of the second coupler extends below the opening; and (e) adding the coating solution to the reservoir at any suitable time.

Substrate coating methods and apparatus

A method and apparatus for electrostatically spray coating substrates with layers of material having uniform thicknesses is provided. A substrate to be coated is electrically grounded and an electrically charged, atomized spray of coating material is directed toward the substrate from a nozzle. The nozzle is traversed along a length of the substrate, which can also be rotated, to coat substantially the entire surface of the substrate. In order to compensate for thickness variations in the applied coating, the speed of traversal of the nozzle is varied. In a preferred embodiment, where photoreceptor drums are produced by spraying a photoreceptor material onto a cylindrical substrate, the speed of traversal of the nozzle is reduced as it approaches at least one end of the cylindrical substrate.

Method for varying nozzle traversal speed to obtain uniform thickness

A process is disclosed for forming at least one thin substantially uniform fluid coating comprising polymeric film forming material on a cylindrical mandrel, solidifying the fluid coating to form a uniform solid coating and separating the uniform solid coating from the mandrel. The process may comprise forming at least one thin substantially uniform fluid coating comprising polymeric film forming material around a cylindrical mandrel, the mandrel having a larger mass or lower thermal conductivity than the polymeric film forming material and a critical surface tension greater than the surface tension of the fluid coating, solidifying the fluid coating to form at least one thin substantially uniform solid coating comprising the polymeric film forming material around the cylindrical mandrel, heating both the uniform solid coating and the mandrel to a temperature at least above the apparent T.sub.g of the solid coating to expand the coating and the mandrel while maintaining contact between the coating and the mandrel, cooling the coating to below the apparent T.sub.g of the solid coating prior to substantial cooling of the mandrel, and cooling the mandrel whereby the mandrel contracts at a greater rate than the polymeric coating until separation occurs between the mandrel and the coating, and removing the coating from the mandrel.
