According to an aspect, a cutting device includes a working blade body having a top surface and a bottom surface. The working blade body defines a plurality of apertures extending between the top surface and the bottom surface. Further, the cutting device includes a plurality of static components each having a top portion and a bottom portion. Each static component is associated with one of the apertures and has a middle portion that is between the top portion and the bottom portion and positioned within the associated aperture. The top portion and the bottom portion extend past the top surface and the bottom surface, respectively, of the working blade body.

According to an aspect, a cutting device includes a static casing that defines a sheathing slot and an opening. The sheathing slot extends to the opening and has a first height at an end of the opening. Further, the bone cutting device includes a horn including a first end and a second end. The first end is configured to operatively connect to a source of movement. Further, the second end includes a cutting component having a second height. The first height is greater than the second height.

Medical devices and related methods for transforming bone, other tissue, or material

A cutting blade with multiple body inserts, each comprising a load-sharing member and a flexible perimeter joint. These inserts reduce the magnitude of frictional forces acting on the blade's body. The load-sharing member, in particular, acts as a point contact between the material being cut, such as bone, and the cutting blade. As such, the frictional forces exerted act only on the load-sharing member as opposed to the entire body. By limiting the real contact area, the magnitude of friction generated during operation is reduced. Additionally, the load-sharing members create a thermally insulating space between the body and the material being cut. The functionality of these body inserts, however, relies on the flexible perimeter joint. The flexible perimeter joint isolates the effects of frictional forces to the load-sharing member by preventing direct contact between the load-sharing member and the surrounding body.

An ultrasonic surgical device capable of cutting biological tissues such as bone and cartilage. The ultrasonic surgical device includes a static casing, which sheaths an ultrasonic horn, and a lubrication film, which separates the ultrasonic horn and the static casing. The static casing, which also incorporates a plurality of fluid channels to allow passage of fluids along its length and eventual distribution of such fluids at the cutting end and biological tissue interface, inhibits the transfer of heat generated along the ultrasonic horn. The cutting end and the static casing are separated by a flexible joint, which serves to inhibit the transfer of vibrational energy, and consequently heat, from the cutting end to the static casing. As such, the static casing remains stable and can be used both to manipulate the surgical device with greater haptic control and facilitate effective penetration of larger cross-sections of biological tissue.
