A process and a system are disclosed for sorption heating and cooling which comprise at least 2 sorption zones. Each sorption zone comprises a heat transfer zone and an adsorption zone containing a sorbent such that the heat transfer zone is in intimate thermal contact with the adsorption zone to permit an essentially uniform temperature lengthwise through the sorption zone and thereby employ essentially all of the sorbent in the process at all times. The process comprises passing heat transfer streams such as a hot stream, a cold stream, and a recirculation stream through the heat transfer zone and routing a refrigerant through the adsorption zone of each sorption zone to affect a desorption stroke, an intermediate stroke and an adsorption stroke in the adsorption zone. Rotary and multi-port valves are employed to circulate the refrigerant and the heat transfer streams. The resulting sorption cooling process achieves a significantly higher coefficient of performance than the prior art.

D-allose has been found to substantially inhibit segmented neutrophil production and to lower platelet counts during in vivo trials, without other significant detrimental clinical effects. Such pharmacological activity makes D-allose a good candidate for treatment, either alone or as an adjuvant, of such conditions as chronic myelogenous leukemia. It also holds promise in reducing thrombus formation during post-operative periods, especially in combination with other anti-clotting drugs.

Use of D-allose as an immunosuppressive agent

A flow scheme is presented for the production of high purity D-allose from D-glucose. The key reaction is epimerization of D-glucose at C-3 to afford D-allose in per pass yields of at least 7%. The epimerization reaction product is then subjected to concentration, decolorization, and deionization before entering a separation zone, preferably a sorptive separation zone, from which an extract stream enriched in D-allose is obtained.

Preparation of high purity D-allose from D-glucose

D-Talose and D-allose are reduced calorie sugars which taste sweet, provide bulk, and undergo the browning reaction. They can be effectively used per se or in combination with intense sweeteners to provide a method of sweetening a broad variety of foods and foodstuffs while providing bulk and body to the product. These materials are especially valuable in baked goods because they closely mimic sucrose in undergoing browning.

Reduced calorie D-aldohexose monosaccharides

An immobilized antibody system can be made by reacting an aminated core support with an antibody in the presence of a condensing agent which promotes the formation of the amide linkage. The immobilized antibody system is highly resistant to leaching, may be made incompressible, sterilizable, and pyrogen-free. Such an immobilized antibody system is well suited for repeated use with minimal change in its physical and biochemical properties.
