Components of medical devices include polypropylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymers (PP-g-PEO) in their base polymer formulations. The base polymeric formulations comprise at least a polymer or co-polymer of propylene. These components are suitable for solvent-bonding with other components and enhance bond strength of the medical devices.

Enhancing bond strength of medical devices

Components of medical devices include polyethylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymers (PE-g-PEO) in their base polymer formulations. The base polymeric formulations comprise at least a polymer or co-polymer of ethylene. These components are suitable for solvent-bonding with other components and enhance bond strength of the medical devices.

Films for medical devices and/or packaging include polyethylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymers (PE-g-PEO) in their base polymer formulations of polyethylene and poly(ethylene oxide). The films may be treated to include a nitric-oxide releasing agent incorporated into the PE-g-PEO. Also, microbial agents for inclusion in medical devices are provided, which comprise: an olefin-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymer, wherein a portion of the poly(ethylene oxide) comprises end groups converted to a nitric oxide-releasing agent. The amphiphilic graft copolymer of the microbial agents may comprise a polyethylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymer (PE-g-PEO), a polypropylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymer (PP-g-PEO), or mixtures thereof.

Breathable films with microbial barrier properties

A novel amphiphilic graft copolymer is described. A process to make amphiphilic graft copolymers via grafting either poly(ethylene oxide) or polylactide side chains onto an EVA platform using oxo-anion ring-opening polymerization chemistry is also described. Polyethylene or polypropylene based graft copolymers are prepared starting from poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) or maleic anhydride grafted isotactic polypropylene respectively. The amphiphilic character will result from the incorporation of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side-chains. Various applications of the novel amphiphilic graft copolymer are also described including, but not limited to, thermoplastic elastomer, films, fibers, fabrics, gels, breathable packaging materials, additive for biodegradable system, surfactant, antistatic additives, polymer compatibilizers, phase transfer catalysts, solid polymer electrolytes, biocompatible polymers, or incorporation into the materials listed above.

Amphiphilic graft copolymers

A polyester or polyester copolymer based composition, such as a polylactic acid based composition, is provided herein. The polyester or polyester copolymer based composition may include a plasticizer, such as an ether based, an ester based, and/or an ether-ester based plasticizer.

Stabilized polyester based compositions

A composition includes a blend of (a) a multi-block copolymer including at least one block of an elastomeric polymer and at least one block of a first polymer including a chiral polymer having a stereo isomeric configuration; and (b) a second polymer including an anti-chiral polymer corresponding to the chiral polymer in (a), wherein the second polymer includes an opposite handed stereo isomeric configuration to the chiral polymer in (a); wherein the blend of the chiral polymer and the anti-chiral polymer form stereo complex sites. A flexible tubing material further includes the blend. In an embodiment, a method of making the blend material is also provided.

Mixtures of different polyolefins may be made by direct, preferably simultaneous, polymerization of one or more polymerizable olefins using two or more transition metal containing active polymerization catalyst systems, at least one of which contains cobalt or iron complexed with selected ligands. The polyolefin products may have polymers that vary in molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, crystallinity, or other factors, and are useful as molding resins and for films.

Disclosed herein is a method comprising masticating a molten polymer; where the polymer is semicrystalline polymer prior to melting; where the masticating polymer is conducted at an elevated temperature of Tm&#x2212;15K to Tm+90K; where Tm is the crystalline melting point of the polymer; masticating the molten polymer while it is cooled from the elevated temperature to a temperature of Ta; where Ta is a temperature that is greater than Tc&#x2212;10K, where Tc is the crystallization temperature of the polymer; and masticating the polymer at the temperature of Ta for a time period of 0.1 to 50 minutes.

Multi-stage process for the polymerization of olefins CH&#x2550;CHR, where R is hydrogen or a C&#x2013;Calkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical, comprising: (I) a first polymerization stage carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising the product of the reaction between an alkyl-Al compound and a solid component comprising at least one compound of transition metal Mnot containing M-&#x3c0; bonds, thus obtaining a porous polymer, (II) a treatment stage, wherein said porous polymer is contacted with a compound capable of deactivating the catalyst used in stage (I) and with a late transition metal complex; and (III) a second stage of polymerization, carried out in the presence of the product obtained from treatment stage (II).

Multi-stage process for the (CO) polymerization of olefins

Selected olefins such as ethylene and &agr;-olefins are polymerized by nickel &lsqb;II&rsqb; complexes of certain monoanionic ligands. The polyolefins are useful in many applications such as molding resins, film, fibers and others. Also described are many novel nickel compounds and their precursors, as well a novel ligands.

Olefins such as ethylene and propylene may be polymerized by using as catalysts novel selected transition metal complexes of bis(carboximidamidatonates) in which the carboximidamidatonate groups are connected together through covalent bonds by a bridging group. The resulting polymers are useful as molding and extrusion resins.

Disclosed herein are processes for polymerizing ethylene, acyclic olefins, and/or selected cyclic olefins, and optionally selected olefinic esters or carboxylic acids, and other monomers. The polymerizations are catalyzed by selected transition metal compounds, and sometimes other co-catalysts. Since some of the polymerizations exhibit some characteristics of living polymerizations, block copolymers can be readily made. Many of the polymers produced are often novel, particularly in regard to their microstructure which gives some of them unusual properties. Numerous novel catalysts are disclosed, as well as some novel processes for making them. The polymers made are useful as elastomers, molding resins, in adhesives, etc. Also described herein is the synthesis of linear &agr;-olefins by the oligomerization of ethylene using as a catalyst system a combination a nickel compound having a selected &agr;-diimine ligand and a selected Lewis or Bronsted acid, or by contacting selected &agr;-diimine nickel complexes with ethylene.
