This invention refers to a paper having crossdirectional regions having increased basis weight. The paper of this invention is especially useful as a wrapping material for a smoking article. The paper may be produced by depositing additional material onto a moving base web in a papermaking machine. The additional material is deposited by means of a rotating drum containing a plurality of slits through which the additional material passes.

The sidestream smoke associated with a cigarette or cigarette-like smoking article is reduced by wrapping the tobacco in a paper wrapper having an additive, such as an organic acid, an acidic or neutral salt or an organic acid in combination with an acidic salt or neutral salt added thereto.

A smoking article in which a flavored aerosol is generated by heat transfer to a flavor bed from the combustion of a heat source is provided. The article generates substantially no sidestream smoke. The transfer of heat from the heat source to the flavor bed is accomplished by convective and radiative heat transfer.

This invention provides smoking compositions which contain a novel .beta.-hydroxycarboxylate flavorant-release additive. This invention provides smoking compositions which contain a novel vanillin flavorant-release additive. Smoking compositions containing a vanillin-release additive

This invention provides smoking compositions which contain a novel vanillin flavorant-release additive. Under cigarette smoking conditions, a combustible filler and/or paper wrapper additive such as ethyl 3-(4'-butoxycarbonyloxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-2-phenylpropanoate pyrolyzes into vanillin and ethyl phenylacetate flavorants as volatile components of the cigarette smoke. A present invention flavorant-release additive is represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R is methyl or ethyl; R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituent; R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aromatic substituent; and R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aromatic substituent.

The calcium carbonate filler level or the basis weight of a paper wrapper for a smoking article is varied to enable the designing of smoking articles with specific characteristics including a specific puff count, tar delivery and carbon monoxide delivery.

The ash characteristics of a cigarette paper wrapper are improved by using fine particle size calcium carbonate filler. In addition, increased calcium carbonate filler loading level, increased basis weight, and various combinations of these variables are used to achieve improved ash characteristics.

This invention provides polyheterocyclic compound useful as a flavorant additive. In one embodiment, this invention provides a polyheterocyclic flavorant additive for smoking compositions such as 1,2-bis(3,5,6-trimethyl-2-pyrazyl)ethane: ##STR1## Under smoking conditions the above illustrated polyheterocyclic additive flavors the mainstream and sidestream smoke. In another embodiment, this invention provides a polyheterocyclic such as 1-(3,5,6-trimethyl-2-pyrazyl)-2-(2-pyridyl)ethane.

This invention provides foodstuffs which contain a substituted-heterocyclic compound as a flavorant additive. In one of its embodiments this invention provides food compositions which contain a substituted-pyrazine flavorant additive such as 2,3-dihydroxy-2,3-dimethyl-1,4-bis(3,5,6-trimethyl-2-pyrazinyl)butane: ##STR1## .

Flavored foodstuffs
