An ion source includes an electron generator, an ionization chamber, and a magnetic field. The electron generator is configured to produce electrons. The ionization chamber has an electron entrance aperture through a first wall, an ion exit aperture through a second wall, and an axis. The ionization chamber is configured to produce ions. The magnetic field is arranged to confine electrons in a beam directed through the electron entrance aperture, in a direction within 45 degrees of parallel to the axis, and towards a location displaced from the ion exit aperture.

A device for a gas chromatograph (GC) system includes an injector connected to an inlet gas line and a conduit assembly. The inlet gas line is configured to pressurize an input end of a column and to deliver a split or purge flow. The conduit assembly includes a conduit surrounding the input end of the analytical column and coupled to a carrier gas line and a controller. The inlet gas line and the carrier gas line connect to a common gas source. The controller, connected to the conduit, has a first mode delivering a flow of carrier gas which is less than the column flow during an injection period to effect a sample transfer to the column and a second mode delivering a flow of carrier gas greater than the column flow following an injection period to prevent the split or purge flow from entering the column.

An ion source assembly is described that includes an electron source configured to inject electrons into an ion volume to ionize an atom or molecule in the ion volume, wherein the electron source includes a filament. A lens electrode is positioned adjacent the electron source and includes an opening configured to pass electrons therethrough from the electron source into the ion volume. A supply voltage source is coupled to the filament and configured to supply a first voltage to the filament, wherein the first voltage is operable to ionize the molecules in the ion volume. Further, a bias voltage source is coupled to the supply voltage source and configured to supply a bias voltage to the lens electrode. Electrons striking the lens electrode are thereafter returned to the filament.

A mass spectrometer includes a vacuum manifold having an interior space, a vacuum pump configured to maintain the interior space at a pressure below 5&#xd7;10-5 torr, a heated component, such as an ion source, located within the interior space, and a multilayer insulator located within the interior space. The multilayer insulator including an inner layer with a first surface oriented towards the heated component and a second surface oriented away from the heated component; and an outer layer with a third surface oriented towards away from the heated component and a fourth surface oriented towards the heated component.

An ion detector includes a first stage dynode configured to receive an ion beam and generate electrons, a photon source arranged to provide photons to the first stage dynode, the photons of sufficient energy to cause the first stage dynode to emit photoelectrons, an electron multiplier configured to receive the electrons or the photoelectrons from the first stage dynode and generate an output proportional to the number of electrons or photoelectrons, and a controller. This arrangement allows each calibrant to evaporate at differing rates while allowing the headspace concentrations to remain relatively unchanged over time (forming a quasi-equilibrium calibrant mixture). The mixture is either delivered to an ion source of a mass spectrometer or to a vacuum pump via a flow restrictor from a calibration vial. The calibrant gas mixture in the headspace volume may be used to calibrate a mass spectrometer.

A method of assessing the linearity and dynamic range of a mass spectrometer is described comprising analyzing two or more test standards containing positional isomers, for example, using a series of N isomeric analytes with or without an internal standard where N is an integer from 2 to 6 inclusive. The concentrations of the N isomeric analytes may or may not be interleaved between two or more standards. The method allows for repeated instrument characterization without having many of the problems associated with using only a single standard such as octafluoronaphthalene (OFN), for example, persistence, and it may lessen sample carryover issues between adjacent samples. Methods are described using positional isomers of dibromodifluorobenzene in various configurations that show an improved means for qualitative and quantitative analysis of one or more analytes by GC-MS.

Methods for determining instrument linearity and quantification

A capillary column includes a fused silica tubing, a polyimide coating over the fusing silica tubing, and a first plurality of integrated ferrules positioned along at least a first portion of the fused silica tubing and spaced apart from one another by a first fixed interval. Each of the first plurality of integrated ferrules includes a first deformable surface and a second deformable surface. The first plurality of integrated ferrules are secured to the column through deformation of the first deformable surface and the second deformable surface is configured to form a seal with a junction when secured with a nut.
