A light pipe is mounted to a support structure along a length of the light pipe. The light pipe has an end at which light enters the light pipe. Light exits the light pipe at an emissive surface of the light pipe. A reflective backing is positioned at a surface of the light pipe opposite the emissive surface. A compliant member between the reflective backing and the support structure maintains the reflective backing flush against the surface of the light pipe.

An example scanner device includes a sealed enclosure including a scan window to allow light to enter the sealed enclosure, and an optical assembly including a light source and an image sensor. The light source is to emit light through the scan window onto a medium to be scanned. The image sensor is to capture light reflected by the medium through the scan window. The optical assembly is rotatably positioned within the sealed enclosure. An actuator is disposed within the sealed enclosure to rotate the optical assembly to aim the optical assembly at different locations on the scan window.

An apparatus can include a frame having a first side and a second side spaced apart from and substantially parallel to the first side by a third side that interconnects and extends longitudinally between the first side and the second side. The third side can define a portion of a media path. A surface of the third side includes a calibration area in the media path, the calibration area extending from an input edge to an exit edge in a media path direction that is substantially transverse to the longitudinal dimension of the third side. A plurality of bars can protrude outwardly from the surface of the third side in the calibration area. Each of the bars extends in the media path direction and has a leading edge and a trailing edge, the leading edge.

Scanners and scanner housings are disclosed. An example scanner includes a housing to carry an optical element, the housing having a first support feature, and a printed circuit board having a second support feature to mate with the first support feature of the housing, the printed circuit board to provide vertical support to the housing when the first and second support features are mated.

A scanner assembly comprising the following components. A scan module having a first surface and configured to receive an image oriented along the first surface. A carriage having a thickness no thicker than a thickness of the scan module perpendicular to the first surface, the carriage configured to receive the scan module and to move the scan module in a direction of travel. A v-bearing coupled to the carriage proximate to one end of the carriage and protruding from the carriage in a direction perpendicular to the first surface. A scan base having a groove and configured to receive the v-bearing. A belt drive configured to move the v-bearing in the groove of the scan base.

Disclosed are apparatuses and methods for holding a document sheet in place against a scanning surface of an image capture system. One such apparatus is a document cover comprising: a body that is oriented parallel to the scanning surface when the document cover is in the closed position; a compliant and elastic document backing that is partially attached to the body and configured to reflect light originating from the image capture system; and a backing constraint configured to secure a central region of the document backing to the body and further configured to constrain movement of the central region in a first direction that is normal to the scanning surface while allowing movement in the same direction of outer regions that are lateral to the central region. The document backing generates a downward spring force which biases the outer regions toward the platen.

Apparatus and method for retaining a document during imaging

A scanning device includes a scanning mechanism, a memory, a processing mechanism, and a scan rate adjustment mechanism. The scanning mechanism scans a media sheet having an image thereon at a variable scan rate, to yield raw data. The memory temporarily stores the raw data. The processing mechanism converts the raw data within the memory into processed data. The raw data is removed from the memory as the raw data is converted. The scan rate adjustment mechanism adjusts the variable scan rate, based on one or more of an amount of free space within the memory, a fill rate at which the raw data is filling the memory, and a removal rate at which the raw data is being removed from the memory, so that the memory does not become completely full.

Scanner

A system is adapted to extract energy from flowing liquid. The system includes at least one vertically-extending vane adapted to move in response to the flowing liquid. The vane has a vertical length wherein at least a portion of the vane can be positioned below a surface of a body of liquid such that the vane forms a swept area defined at least partially by the vertical portion of vertical lengths of the vane positioned below the surface. The system further includes a mechanism adapted to selectively vary the swept area.

A circuit connected to a linear array of photosensors generates image data representative of information printed on a document and adjusts the gains applied to the outputs of selected ones of the photosensors to eliminate streaks in the image data otherwise due to the selected photosensors imaging debris on an optical reference surface. The circuit determines which photosensors have low output values during a factory scan of a clean white reference surface. During a subsequent user environment calibration scan, low output values are adjusted to the average of their neighbors, but only for locations not identified as having low outputs during the factory scan. The circuit additionally performs a PRNU compensation and further adjusts the gains applied to each of the outputs of the photosensors so that all of their output values have a substantially uniform value.
