A panel filter element has a pleated filter media having peaks and valleys arranged in pleated sets of first and second panels. The pleated sets are adhered along side edges to form clean-side pockets which open adjacent to the valleys. The first and second panels have elongated embossments projecting both into and away from the pockets to keep the pockets open and to keep the pleated sets separate. Dirty air flows into the filter media both transverse to the peaks and laterally between the pleated sets of first and second panels. By having dirty air to be filtered flowing both transversly and laterally, the dirt holding capacity of the filter is increased while increases in restriction are minimized.

A filter/oil pan assembly for use in devices such as transmissions for vehicles and for use as oil pans in internal combustion engines includes a housing having an upper chamber and a sump, wherein a filter element is disposed between the upper chamber and the sump. The filter element includes a filter media having pleats which extend in the direction parallel to the direction of movement of the vehicle utilizing the filter element. In order to facilitate flow through the filter element, all interior surfaces of the housing slope toward a well in which the filter element is positioned and the filter element itself has laterally projecting flanges which slope downwardly toward the filter media.

A gasket arrangement for sealing between first and second components includes a tube through the material of the gasket for transferring fluid through the gasket. The first and second components may be, for example, a transmission case and transmission fluid pan.

Gasket arrangement

A sump pan for a device such as a transmission or engine lubricating system includes an upper chamber and a lower chamber which are separated by a partition. The partition has an opening therethrough in which a filter media is positioned for filtering dirty fluid in the upper chamber so that clean fluid collects in the lower chamber. A suction tube extends through the partition for pulling the clean fluid for recirculation through the device utilizing the fluid such as a transmission or an engine. A bypass valve is also disposed in the partition so that if the fluid becomes too viscous to pass through the filter media, or the filter media becomes clogged, the bypass valve will open so that the fluid can still circulate.

An oil sump with an integral filter includes an upper sump having a major opening therethrough which contains the integral filter and a minor opening through which projects a tube which is connected to the inlet of a suction pump. Beneath the upper sump is a lower sump into which the tube projects and with which the opening with the filter is in communication. Both the upper sump and lower sump are made of a plastic material, such as a thermoplastic or thermosetting material, which includes enforcing fibers. A lower sump is fixed to the upper sump by either a strong permanent adhesive or by welding, using known welding processes such as ultrasonic welding, vibration welding or friction welding.

An arrangement for filtering coolants used in internal combustion engines utilizes a panel filter disposed between a radiator core and an outlet header tank so as to trap particulates entrained in the coolant prior to returning the coolant to the engine. The panel filter has a pleated filter media surrounded by a gasket, which gasket seals between the outlet end of the radiator core and the outlet header tank.

An arrangement for filtering a liquid wherein the liquid accumulates in a sump pan includes a filter media, such as a pleated filter media which has a height approximating the height of the sump pan. Consequently, the filter media tends to interfere with the flow of filtered liquid towards a suction tube which returns the filtered liquid for recirculation. In order to facilitate flow of filtered liquid to the suction tube, the pan includes at least one shallow channel extending transverse to the pleats of the filter media. This arrangement with respect to vehicle transmission oil pans and vehicle lubrication oil pans.

A high pressure spin-on filter cartridge utilizes an end plate which is strengthened by four substantially triangular shaped gussets which project from an annular U-shaped bridge that supports an internally threaded hub member. The internally threaded hub member provides an outlet for the filter cartridge while a plurality of radially positioned inlet openings are positioned between the gussets. The gussets extend radially past a sealing gasket that seals the spin-on filter canister with a machine on which it is mounted.

A lubricating oil filter cartridge is disclosed herein. The filter cartridge includes a bypass valve configured and arranged for opening at a selected oil pressure that is substantially higher at low oil temperatures than at the higher operating temperatures to reduce the amount of oil that bypasses the filter at low oil temperatures. The bypass valve is preferably formed of a temperature sensitive elastic material, for example, low swell, high modulus silicone, having an elastic modulus which is substantially higher at low oil temperatures than at higher oil temperatures.

A filter including a combination bypass valve and anti-drain valve is disclosed herein. The filter includes an annular valve support which supports an annular valve member disposed between the support and a filter cartridge. The valve support has an inner sleeve portion which seats against an end plate and an outer sleeve portion including bypass louvers therethrough. The valve member has an expandable collar portion which normally seals the bypass louvers and a skirt portion which normally seals inlet openings extending through the end plate. The skirt permits flow through the inlet openings into the filter but prevents out of the filter through the inlet openings. Excessive pressure caused by a clogged filter element deflects the expandable collar away from the bypass louvers thereby permitting flow to bypass the filter element.

Anti-drain back/pressure relieved filter cartridges

In order to prevent the formation of flash on a gasket used to seal a filter element when the filter element is mounted in a housing to filter a fluid, such as air for an internal combustion engine, a molding method and apparatus utilizes a pair of mold components which abut along a mold line and define a cavity for forming the gasket. As the expandable material expands to fill the cavity and form the gasket, a portion of the material adjacent the mold line is received in an annular groove in one of the mold components so that flash is not formed at the mold line. One of the mold components also has an upwardly sloping ramp surface so that air and gas move along the ramp surface as the material expands and does not become trapped in the cavity, thus avoiding defects and blemishes in the gasket due to trapped air bubbles.

Molding apparatus

A filter element useful for filtering intake air for internal combustion engines includes a first filter media separated by an air space from a second filter media. The second filter media has a greater air permeability than the first filter media, but is electrostatically charged. As a result of this arrangement, the capacity of the filter element is enhanced because large particles are trapped by the first filter media and smaller particles are trapped by the second filter media. As a result, the filter element has a longer life because, for a given contaminant condition of an air stream, unacceptable clogging of the filter element takes longer.

A spin-on filter including a combination anti-drainback and bypass valve is disclosed herein. The valve includes an annular valve support disposed between a filter element and an end plate of the filter. The valve support has an inner sleeve portion which seats about a central outlet of the end plate and an outer sleeve portion with holes therethrough. The valve member has an expandable collar portion which normally seals the bypass holes and functions as a bypass valve and a skirt portion with normally seals the inlet holes in the end plate and functions as an anti-drainback valve. The valve member is preferably made of a low swell silicone material which requires higher oil pressures to bypass the filter at low starting oil temperatures than at higher operating oil temperatures.
