An emergency indicator system which comprises a telephone located within a building and a visual display unit. A facility electrically connected to the telephone is for activating the visual display unit, when a person dials 911 on the telephone during an emergency, so that the building can be quickly located, such as by an emergency rescue vehicle, the police, etc.

Platinum corrosion reducing amounts of a premelted oxide mixture that is PbO and B.sub.2 O.sub.3, or PbO and SiO.sub.2, or PbO, SiO.sub.2 and B.sub.2 O.sub.3 are added to raw batch ingredients for a lead-containing solder glass. A fluorine-free glass composition is disclosed especially adapted for forming the faceplate of a cathode ray tube such as a television tube. The glass is silica based and includes a fluorine-free flux and an X-ray absorber which may comprise lead oxide, barium oxide, strontium oxide, and mixtures thereof. Optionally, the glass may contain still other oxides to impart desired physical properties. The absence of fluorine avoids the usual problems of that ingredient in melting and processing the glass. In addition, the resultant glass as a faceplate provides improved protection to a viewer of a cathode ray tube by excellent absorption of X-rays.

A glass composition is disclosed that is useful as a solder glass for sealing components together. However, the glass is also especially adapted for use as an electric resistance film for coating the inner neck or funnel portions of a cathode ray tube to reduce arcing. The glass composition includes primarily the oxides of vanadium and phosphorous with the preferred addition of either zinc oxide or lead oxide. Still other metal oxides may be optionally included such as oxides of barium, antimony, lithium, manganese, silicon, boron, molybdenum and mixtures thereof.

Disclosed is a technique for melting X-ray absorbing glass compositions by a process wherein molten glass is floated or supported on a bath of molten tin. The X-ray absorbing glass compositions are free of the oxides of lead, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, cadmium, and other readily reducible oxides to prevent discoloration of the glass upon contact with molten metal.
