A method of evaluating a laser comprises providing a current into the laser and measuring a voltage output of an electroabsorptive modulator (EAM) coupled to the laser. A device under test includes a laser, and an electroabsorptive modulator (EAM), wherein said EAM monitors an output of said laser.

In accordance with the invention, a multimode optical fiber communication system is provided with offset illumination by disposing an optical pinhole adjacent an end of the multimode fiber core and offset from the center of the core. A method and apparatus for passively aligning an optical element on an optical die wherein multiple potential mounting pads are supplied for potential mounting of the optical component. Method and apparatus for passively aligning components on semiconductor dies

There is disclosed, an optical subassembly includes a platform on which a laser and photodiode are mounted. The laser has a rear facet through which passes a small portion of the light emitted by the laser. The photodiode is mounted on the surface of the platform with a light admitting facet for receiving a portion of the light emitted from the rear facet of the laser being substantially perpendicular to the light emitting facet of the laser. The surface of the platform may include a channel. The channel may be tapered from a narrower end near the laser to a wider end near the photodiode, and may be coated with a light-reflective material.

Low profile optical subassembly

There is disclosed a method of positioning an optical subassembly for testing includes positioning an optical subassembly within a capture zone on a support surface of a test fixture. At least two probes engage surfaces of respective ones of precisely located fiducials in a surface of the optical subassembly. A third probe contacts a surface of the optical subassembly, which in a preferred embodiment may be another fiducial in the surface of the optical subassembly. Upon engagement of the probes with surfaces of respective fiducials and movement of the probes further into respective fiducials, the optical subassembly is translated into more precise alignment with optics of the test fixture.
