A straight back side chair has a seat cushion and a back member, and includes a low resistance loading device that is operated through a system of cords and pulleys from handgrips. The pulleys are supported on arms that are mounted to the back of the chair and which can be selectively positioned for different types of exercise. The arms can be positioned laterally out from the sides of the chair for doing butterfly type exercise; pushed downwardly at an angle for curls; or positioned overhead above the back of the chair for permitting a person seated in the chair to do pull downs. When the chair is not in use as an excerciser, the arms are folded out of the way so it functions as a side chair and does not visually intrude on the usable space in a room or tend to give the room the look of a gymnasium. The force resistance device is very compact so that it takes little space beneath the seat, permitting a cushioned or padded seat to be used. A panel having a display of counters, force indicators and the like can also be mounted on the chair seat and made to be retractable when not in use.

Combination chair and exercise unit

A resistance or load indicator for use with an exercising unit, in particular one which has motions or movements in opposite directions for exercise, such as reciprocal arm or leg exercisers, and in particular one which can be used with coordinated movements of the arms and legs. The resistance indicator unit comprises an indicator plate that is frictionally loaded to turn from a centered position as the exercise load is applied. The indicator plate is spring loaded so it will turn until the friction control slips. The amount of movement of the spring loaded plate indicates the load being applied in either direction.

Resistance indicator for frictionally resistant exercise device

A ski stiffness indicator comprising a type of a C clamp which receives a pair of skis placed bottom to bottom, and which can be used to force the middle portions of the skis together. The force required for urging the portions of the skis together is registered on a gage, and the flexing of the skis under a selected load indicates the stiffness of the skis, and thus indicates the relative flex to select skis for varying conditions. Also, the load required to make the skis touch along their length indicates the ski stiffness.
