An automobile type exhaust gas lead filter is particularly applicable to diesel engine smoke reduction. It has a tubular housing with alumina coated metal wire fibers as the filter bed, which is centrally located. There are open spaces forming plenums at the ends of the housing. And, the inlet and outlet pipes have baffles in alignment therewith to prevent direct impingement of exhaust gases on the coated wire. Also, the baffles are spaced from the inside ends of the pipes to minimize pressure drops.

Lead filter for internal combustion engine exhaust gases

A simple low cost smoke filter. It is adapted for use in an internal combustion engine exhaust system. It has a tapered body with a mass of alumina coated wire supported therein. The filter medium is under some longitudinal force created by a pervious support that has an unstressed curved configuration which is flattened against the medium. This is done in order to cause radial compression because of the taper, as well as longitudinal compression thereof.

Smoke filter for internal combustion engines

A fuel system in which a fuel dispensing nozzle removably and sealably engages a fuel tank. Pressure sensing means in the nozzle monitors the degree of vacuum established adjacent to the nozzle seal, and in response thereto, actuates a vacuum control apparatus. The latter then functions by regulating the volume of vapor flow withdrawn from the fuel tank, to maintain a desired degree of vacuum adjacent to said seal whereby to avoid or minimize the intake of air into the fuel system.

A fuel dispensing nozzle for a closed system holding a volatile fuel. The nozzle is adapted to sealably engage the filler pipe of a fuel tank to avoid passage of fumes to the atmosphere during a fuel transfer operation. The nozzle will automatically discontinue fuel flow in response to a reduction in flow rate within the closed system, which would otherwise cause recycling of fuel through the nozzle and back to its source.

A system for transferring a volatile liquid such as a fuel into a tank, from a storage facility. A nozzle sealably and removably engages the tank to pass a flow of liquid to the tank, and to return vapors therefrom to the storage facility. The fuel passing to the nozzle is chilled in accordance with the pressure in the storage facility, whereby to maintain a vacuum in the storage facility and therefore at the nozzle tank interface.

Vacuum assist fuel system

The invention relates to an internal combustion engine into which an exhaust gas recycling system is incorporated. The system includes means to receive air as well as a desired amount of exhaust gas, and to form the two into a preliminary gaseous mixture. The mixture is physically formed within a gas mixer comprising a mixing compartment, into which separate streams of gas and air are concurrently introduced by way of concentrically arranged inlets therefor.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for reducing the amount of undesirable products of combustion which are discharged to the atmosphere from an internal combustion engine during operation of the latter. The apparatus comprises, means for segregating a portion of an exhaust gas stream from the engine's exhaust discharge manifold or valve. The hot exhaust gas segment is cooled, combined with air to form a preliminary mixture, and delivered to the engine's combustion chambers. A predetermined volume of fuel is injected into the combustion chamber whereby to intermix with a portion of the preliminary mixture in such a manner that at least a part of the latter becomes combustible. The apparatus for achieving the method comprises, means for recycling said segment of said hot exhaust gas. It further comprises means for controllably regulating the flow of the latter in response to the load variations imposed on the engine.

A nozzle valve of the type for fuel injection in an internal combustion engine. It has a needle and a valve seat adjacent to one end of the needle, plus a spring to bias the needle against the seat. It also has means for lifting the needle off the seat when the spring bias is exceeded. And, it includes means actuated by the needle lift to initiate an electric spark signal.

A piston structure for an internal combustion engine which utilizes fuel injection to furnish the engine charge. To provide a more effective operation, and to more fully utilize the air induced into the engine, the piston face is formed with a main cavity as well as with one or more supplementary depressions spaced away from the main cavity whereby to promote turbulence at the combustion chamber and consequently a better fuel-air mixture during a power stroke.

A thermal reactor adapted to receive hot exhaust gases generated as the result of the combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel within an engine. The hot exhaust gas stream taken directly from the engine, is passed into a chamber where it reacts with air, preferably in the presence of a reaction promoting element. However, prior to the reaction stage, the hot gas is urged into a swirling motion and through a constricted passageway whereby to provide through a longer dwell period, better mixing, and avoid direct impingement of the gas against the catalyst bed surface when the latter is utilized.
