The invention provides methods and kits for detecting the presence of, the amount of, or the concentration of a substantially non-emitting metal in a sample by a) providing a sensitizer to a chelator of the substantially non-emitting metal thereby creating a sensitized-metal complex; b) adding an unsensitized chelate, and c) detecting a signal from the unsensitized chelate. The substantially non-emitting metal may be gadoliniumn and may exist in complex with a chelator. The unsensitized chelate may be terbium (Tb) or europium (Eu) and the detecting a signal may be performed by fluorescence.

Methods and kits for detecting non-luminescent or weakly luminescent metals

Methods for making particles, such as nanoparticles, devices useful in the methods, and particles made by the method are described herein. The methods involves the use of microfluidic device, such that upon mixing solutions of the materials to form the particles (or a solution of the material or materials to form the particles and a non-solvent for the material or materials) at least two symmetrical microvortices are formed simultaneously. The method can be used to prepare polymeric or non-polymeric particles and hybrid particles, such as lipid-polymer hybrid particles, as well as such particles containing one or more agents associated with the particles.

Mass production and size control of nanoparticles through controlled microvortices

The present invention is directed to synthetic nanoparticles useful as imaging agents for use in MRI, CT, Gamma-scintigraphy, or optical imaging techniques. The synthetic nanoparticles comprise at least one apolipoprotein that is not an apoB lipoprotein, at least one amphipathic lipid, and at least one metallic or non-metallic contrast agent linked through a chelator to a component of the nanoparticle, wherein the one metallic or non-metallic contrast agent is present in an amount of between 5% to about 50% (w/w) of the nanoparticle, and the nanoparticle has a diameter of from about 5 nm to about 50 nm. Compositions and kits comprising the synthetic nanoparticles and methods of making and using the same are also provided.
