A hybrid absorbent foam includes an integrated hybrid foam layer having an open surface, a closed surface, and a foam body extending between the open and closed surfaces. The integrated hybrid foam layer has an open-cell content of at least 50%, while the closed surface provides a barrier to aqueous liquids. The integrated hybrid foam layer is formed as a single layer, and has a substantially uniform polymer composition throughout its thickness. The integrated hybrid foam layer combines the functions of liquid absorbency, retention, and barrier into a single layer, and is useful in a wide variety of absorbent articles.

Hybrid absorbent foam and articles containing it

A highly absorptive open cell foam having a ratio of cell size to pore size of between about 1 and about 10. A juice absorbing food package comprising a tray having a bottom bounded by an upwardly extending lip around the perimeter of the bottom and a liquid-absorbing pad comprised of polymer foam joined to the bottom of said tray, wherein the polymer foam is a highly absorptive open cell foam having a ratio of cell size to pore size of between about 1 and about 10. The tray of the juice-absorbing package may be overwrapped with gas permeable film, and may be provided with an oxygen absorbing substance therein. Alternatively, the overwrapped tray may be placed in a sealed barrier bag that is subsequently purged with a non-oxidizing gas such as carbon dioxide.

Highly absorbent open cell polymer foam and food package comprised thereof

A packaging system for preserving perishable moisture-containing items comprising a shrinkable barrier bag comprising at least one compartment, and a one-way valve disposed in the wall of the barrier bag, sealing means for closing the barrier bag, a carbon dioxide gas source gas disposed within the barrier bag, a clear transparent oxygen-permeable container disposed within the barrier bag, for containment of perishable moisture containing items, and a water-containing pad disposed within the barrier bag for providing humidity within the barrier bag.

Packaging system for extending the shelf life of moisture-containing foods

A juice absorbing food package comprising a tray having a bottom bounded by an upwardly extending lip around the perimeter of the bottom and a liquid-absorbing pad comprised of polymer foam joined to the bottom of said tray, wherein the polymer foam is open cell foam. The tray of the juice absorbing package is overwrapped with gas permeable film, and may be provided with an oxygen absorbing substance therein. Alternatively, the overwrapped tray may be placed in a sealed barrier bag that is subsequently purged with a non-oxidizing gas such as carbon dioxide.

The open cells within the gas-permeable tray contain less than about 0.05 volume percent of oxygen, and the atmosphere within the sealed barrier bag contains less than about 0.05 volume percent of oxygen.

Packaging system for preserving perishable items

A modified atmosphere package for storing oxygen sensitive goods which contains a gas permeable tray for holding the oxygen-sensitive goods and a gas permeable film wrapped over the tray. The tray is made from foam material; at least about 20 volume percent of said foam material is open cell foam. A hinged flap is connected to a wall of the tray and contains a receptacle in which a source of carbon dioxide (such as dry ice) may be disposed.

A modified atmosphere package for storing oxygen sensitive goods containing a a gas impermeable tray including flanges around the perimeter of the tray and a bottom inside surface, and a a gas impermeable film with a bottom inside surface. The film is fitted with a one-way valve and is positioned over and adjacent to the flanges of said tray, and the film is sealed to such flanges. A support extends from the bottom inside surface of the tray to the bottom inside surface of the gas impermeable film, the support being adapted to prevent the film from collapsing when the atmospheric pressure above the film exceeds the atmospheric pressure below the film.

Modified atmosphere packaging method

A modified atmosphere package for storing oxygen sensitive goods which contains a a gas permeable tray for holding the oxygen sensitive goods, a gas permeable film positioned over and adjacent to the tray forming a wrapped tray, a barrier bag with an inside surface and an outside surface within which the wrapped tray is disposed, an oxygen absorber disposed within the barrier bag, and a pressure relief valve located on the outside surface of the barrier bag. The tray contains foam material, at least about 20 volume percent of which is open cell foam with an average cell diameter of from about 0.001 to about 0.020 inches. A film of gas permeable material is disposed over and contiguous with the bottom wall of the gas permeable tray. The barrier bag has an oxygen permeability of less than 10 cubic centimeters per 100 square inches per 24 hours.

A package for storing oxygen-sensitive goods (such as meat) which contains a gas impermeable tray wrapped in a gas permeable film, a barrier bag within which the wrapped tray is disposed, a closure for closing an open end of the barrier bag, and two one-way valves. One of the one-way valves is located on the inside of one side of the barrier bag, and the other of the one-way valves is located on the outside of the other side of the barrier bag.

Method for creating modified atmosphere packaging

A modified atmosphere package for storing oxygen sensitive goods which contains a a gas permeable tray for holding the oxygen sensitive goods, a gas permeable film positioned over and adjacent to the tray forming a wrapped tray, a barrier bag with an inside surface and an outside surface within which the wrapped tray is disposed, and a pressure relief valve located on the outside surface of the barrier bag. The tray contains foam material, at least about 20 volume percent of which is open cell foam with an average cell diameter of from about 0.001 to about 0.020 inches. A film of gas permeable material is disposed over and contiguous with the bottom wall of the gas permeable tray. The barrier bag has an oxygen permeability of less than 5 cubic centimeters per 100 square inches per 24 hours.

A package for storing oxygen sensitive goods includes a first web in the form of a tray which may include flanges, a valve or valves, carbon dioxide, a good or goods, such as red meat or other oxygen sensitive food and non-food products and a second web sealed to the tray in the form of a gas impermeable film to which has been fitted a one-way valve. The pressure within the package increases as a gaseous modified atmosphere is introduced through the one-way valve in the tray. The oxygen within the barrier bag is forced out of the one-way valve located on the film. A vacuum applied to the one-way valve on the film facilitates the removal of oxygen. Additionally, the atmosphere within the bag can be monitored by locating sensors within the gas stream leaving the one-way valve in the film as it leaves the interior of the package.

A domed container for the preparation and display of food includes a receptacle, a dome cover, and a hollow mold member. The receptacle has a bottom with a top surface and an outer circumference. The bottom possesses at least one groove in a closed, continuous pattern. The groove has two side surfaces and a bottom surface, and each side surface is configured to include projections extending into the groove. The dome cover includes a top wall having at least one wall depending therefrom. The depending wall has an outside surface and an inside surface. The container possesses a locking structure for releasably locking the cover to the receptacle. The hollow mold member, which forms a closed continuous pattern, has a lower edge that fits into the groove of the receptacle and is held in place from each side by an interference fit between the projections of the side surfaces of the groove and the lower edge, thereby removably attaching the hollow mold member perpendicularly to the receptacle.

Containers for preparation and display of foods

A polystyrene resin in foam form having a basis weight of less than about 20 g/100 in.sup.2 and a density of about 6 lbs./ft.sup.3 or less, the foam precursor of which is either a polystyrene having a melt index of about 8 or more or a polystyrene in combination with a minor proportion of any other material which will result in a melt index of about 8 or more. A method of forming such a polystyrene resin foam structure includes combining the resin in molten form under pressure with the blowing agent of at least approximately 100% carbon dioxide and extruding the mixture through a die into an atmosphere of reduced pressure to form the foam structure.

High melt index polystytene foam and method

A microwavable container useful in the microwave heating of items, particularly foodstuffs, comprises readily separable components. An outer shell which will remain relatively cool and, therefore, capable of being handled, is flexibly hinged to an inner shell capable of sustaining high temperatures. The inner shell rotatably folds about the flexible hinge in such a way that it is arranged in a substantially spaced relation to the outer shell and is releasably secured to the outer shell. The outer shell is made of a first microwavable polymeric material. The inner shell is made of a second microwavable polymeric material which is different from the first microwavable polymeric material. A consumer may heat a food product in the inner shell of the present invention without risking contact with that inner shell when the inner shell becomes hot. After use, the components are readily separable for separate recycling processes.
