An alkylbenzene is alkylated with an alkene, in the presence of a sodium/potassium alloy catalyst, on a saturated carbon atom which is alpha to the ring at temperatures which are lower than the temperatures used in a current commercial process. In a pre-alkylation reaction, the catalyst is reacted with a compound which has a saturated carbon atom alpha to a double bond in order to form a catalytic species. Higher amounts of catalyst are used in the pre-alkylation reaction than in the analogous reaction of the current commercial process. Following alkylation, the phase which contains the alkylation product is separated from the phase which contains the catalytic species. The process produces less isomeric and other soluble byproducts, and enables the efficacious production of longer chain alkylbenzenes without the formation of insoluble tars characteristic of the current commercial process.

A process is described which comprises heating a methylalumoxane solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature of at least 35.degree. C. for at least 0.5 hour in an inert, dry atmosphere such that the resulting heat-treated composition provides, in a supported metallocene catalyst produced using the heat-treated composition, increased activity as compared to the same supported metallocene catalyst produced in the same way except for using a portion of the methylalumoxane solution that has not been heat-treated. Before the heating the methylalumoxane of the solution contains from about 5 to about 35 mole percent unreacted trimethylaluminum, and was formed by partial hydrolysis of trimethylaluminum with free water in an organic solvent.

Heat treated alumoxanes

An aluminoxane product is prepared by reacting water which contains a stabilizing agent, such as a lithium halide, with a hydrocarbyl aluminum compound, such as tri-methylaluminum, in an organic solvent. The product has increased resistance to gel-formation therein because of the stabilizing agent dissolved in the water used in forming the reaction product.

Use of heat treated alumoxanes in preparing supported catalysts

A aluminoxane product is prepared by reacting water which contains a stabilizing agent, such as a lithium halide, with a hydrocarbyl aluminum compound, such as trimethylaluminum, in an organic solvent.

Water, hydrocarbylaluminum such as trimethylaluminum, and organic solvent such as toluene are fed to a reactor in controlled proportions and under temperature control to form a dilute reaction product mixture of specified composition and concentration. This solution is then processed so as to form at least two product mixtures, one of which is essentially aluminoxane-free hydrocarbylaluminum dissolved in organic solvent, and another of which is a concentrated solution of organoaluminum compounds composed in essence of hydrocarbylaluminum (e.g. trimethylaluminum) and hydrocarbylaluminoxane (e.g., methylaluminoxane) in organic solvent in which the amount aluminoxane far exceeds the amount of hydrocarbylaluminum. The process fulfills the need for practical, commercially-feasible process technology capable of producing concentrated aluminoxane solutions with no significant yield losses, and by process technology that can be applied both to batch and to continuous modes of operation.

An improved process for making aluminoxanes by the addition of water to a solvent solution of a hydrocarbylaluminum compound and/or an aluminoxane feeds the water through an orifice which is surrounded by a flow of solvent which carries the water into the solvent solution of hydrocarbylaluminum compound and/or aluminoxane.

Aluminoxane is made by feeding water, hydrocarbylaluminum and organic solvent to a loop recycle reactor under conditions so as to react the water and hydrocarbylaluminum to form a hydrocarbylaluminoxane, removing a portion of the solvent and hydrocarbylaluminoxane from said reactor and recirculating the remaining portion of the reactor contents through a reaction zone where the water initially contacts the hydrocarbylaluminum. The feed rates of water, hydrocarbylaluminum and solvent to the reactor and the withdrawal rate of solvent and hydrocarbylaluminoxane from the reactor can be adjusted to produce a substantially steady state reaction.

A process for making a metallocene, said process comprising the steps of (a) reacting an alkylsubstituted cyclopentadiene ligand, which contains a mixture of endo- and exo-isomers, with up to about a 10% excess over a stoichiometric amount of a deprotonation agent based on the amount of endo-isomers, so as to form a salt of said endo-isomers, (b) reacting the endo-isomer salt with a transition or actinide metal compound so as to form said metallocene and (c) optionally separating said exo-isomers and trace amounts of unreacted endo-isomers from said metallocene by distillation.
