The present disclosure generally relates to a head assembly in a data storage device. The data storage device may include magnetic media embedded in the device or magnetic media from an insertable cassette or cartridge (e.g., in an LTO drive), where the head assembly reads from and writes to the magnetic media. During device operation, the magnetic media moves across the head assembly. The magnetic media experiences higher contact stress at certain points or portions of the head assembly. A sensor guard is coupled to the head assembly. The sensor guard comprises at least one chamfered surface or at least one stepped surface to decrease the contact stress between the magnetic media and the head assembly during device operation. The at least one chamfered or stepped surface may be disposed on a leading edge of the sensor guard.

Reduction of high tape contact pressure points against head assembly

In a tape drive comprising a tape head module, a tape contacts the tape head module during operation. The tape head module comprises a substrate, a plurality of data heads disposed adjacent to the substrate at a media facing surface (MFS), and a closure disposed adjacent to the plurality of data heads. The closure comprises a first side portion disposed at a leading edge, a second side portion disposed at the leading edge, the first and second side portions being recessed from the MFS, and a central portion disposed between the first and second side portions at the leading edge. In some embodiments, the central portion is recessed from the MFS. The central portion may comprise a notch, a taper, or one or more steps. The first and second side portions may be tapered, rounded, or comprise one or more steps to reduce contact of a tape during operation.

Notched head design for tape applications

The present disclosure is generally related to a tape drive comprising a tape head assembly. The tape head assembly comprises a spring adaptor, the spring adaptor comprising a first hole, a second hole, and a spring member disposed between the first hole and the second hole, a beam disposed within the first hole of the spring adaptor, a first module disposed on the beam, the first module comprising a first plurality of write transducers and a first plurality of read transducers, a second module disposed on the beam adjacent to the first module, the second module comprising a second plurality of write transducers and a second plurality of read transducers, and an actuator disposed in the first hole. The actuator is controllable to move the beam in a direction transverse to a media movement direction. The spring adaptor stabilizes the beam while the beam is being actuated.

A magnetic recording head assembly is provided and is configured to read from and write to a magnetic media. The head assembly includes a first module having a first media facing surface (MFS), a first closure, and a first recessed portion disposed between the first MFS and the first closure. The first MFS includes AlTiC. A second module is provided having a second MFS, a second closure, and a second recessed portion disposed between the second MFS and the second closure. The second MFS includes AlTiC. An overcoat disposed within the first and second recessed portions includes an adhesive layer and a protective layer disposed within the first and second recessed portion.

Magnetic head with assisted magnetic recording

A method for forming a protective overcoat onto a tape bearing surface of a tape head used for magnetic tape recording. In order to ensure optimal surface tension and liftoff properties of the ink mask, the tape bearing surface is treated with a first application of ethanol, followed by an application of polydimethylsiloxane, followed by a second application of ethanol. After this treatment an ink mask can be printed onto the tape bearing surface so as to form a mask having an opening over the location of the magnetic transducer. An etching can then be performed followed by the deposition of a protective coating such as alumina.
