Embodiments of the present invention provide for syntheses and uses of mechanism-based nutritional colorants from vitamin C and amino-containing compounds, wherein the amino-containing compounds can be one of natural compounds or synthetic compounds, wherein the amino-containing compounds can be made through environmentally-friendly radical reactions that follow the antioxidant mechanism of action of vitamin C.

The invention provides compounds of the formula: wherein X, Y, and Z are as defined in the specification. The compounds are effective anti-tumor agents. The invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions comprising a compound of the above formula or a salt thereof, intermediates useful for preparing a compound of the above formula, and therapeutic methods comprising administering a compound of the above formula or a salt thereof to a mammal in need thereof.

This invention provides an apparatus and a method for testing insect repellents that is derived from the behavior of mosquitoes in nature. The method is based on the displacement of mosquitoes from a place (cork) on a created habitat (corked-box) using a repellent substance. It does not require attractants, or blood-hungry mosquitoes, and it is appropriate for high throughput testing of different materials at the same time and in few hours.

A process for producing new anticancer drugs such that the drugs can be administered in a nontoxic, proto-drug form and, subsequent to a time delay which allows for differential concentration in the target cancer or invasive tissues or cells, the non-toxic drug is then modified by an activation drug to selectively provide toxic levels of a pharmacologically active agent to the target issue.
