A piston capable of operating at a high temperature and consequently contributing to a high in-cylinder temperature, as well as reducing engine oil temperature, when used in an internal combustion engine, is provided. The piston includes an upper portion and a lower portion welded together to present a cooling gallery therebetween. The cooling gallery extends circumferentially around a center axis of the piston and is spaced the center axis. A partition is located in the cooing gallery and extends from one inner surface to another inner surface of the cooling gallery. The partition extends circumferentially around the center axis, and divides the cooling gallery into at least a first gallery portion and a second gallery portion. The partition can be formed as one piece with the upper portion or the lower portion. Alternatively, the partition can be formed as a separate piece from the upper portion and the lower portion.

Dual gallery steel piston

A vehicle internal combustion piston and method of construction thereof are provided. The piston includes piston body extending along a central longitudinal axis, having an upper combustion wall forming an upper combustion surface and an undercrown surface opposite the upper combustion surface. An annular ring belt region depends from the upper combustion surface, a pair of skirt panels depend from the ring belt region, and a pair of pin bosses depend from the undercrown surface to provide laterally spaced pin bores aligned along a pin bore axis for receipt of a wrist pin. The undercrown surface forms a central undercrown surface, and a portion of either an open outer cooling gallery, a sealed outer cooling gallery, or an outer galleryless region, wherein an insulating coating is applied to at least one of the portions of the undercrown surface.

A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a lower part joined to an upper part, for example by friction welding with inertia. The upper part presents a combustion surface and an undercrown surface. The piston also includes a cooling gallery surface provided by the upper part and the lower part. The cooling gallery surface surrounds a volume of space for containing a cooling media. The piston can include serrations in the cooling gallery surface and/or undercrown surface to increase surface area and thus reduce the temperature of the piston. The piston can also include shaped weld curls, instead of or in addition to the serrations, which also increase surface area and reduce the temperature of the piston.

Piston cooling gallery shaping to reduce piston temperature

A piston and method of construction is provided. The piston includes a top part fixed to a bottom part. The top part has an uppermost surface with annular inner and outer upper joining surfaces depending therefrom. The bottom part has a pair of pin bosses with pin bores aligned with one another along a pin bore axis; a pair of upwardly extending annular inner and outer lower joining surfaces and a combustion bowl wall. Inner and outer weld joints fix the inner and outer upper and lower joining surfaces to one another. An annular cooling gallery is formed laterally between the upper and lower joining surfaces. The inner weld joint joining the top part to the bottom part is located within the combustion bowl wall and configured to minimized the compression height of the piston.

Steel piston with cooling gallery and method of construction thereof

A steel piston achieving increased thermal brake efficiency in an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a crown presenting a combustion surface, an outer side wall depending from the combustion surface, an outer cooling gallery, and an undercrown cooling gallery. The outer cooling gallery extends circumferentially along the outer side wall beneath the combustion surface. According to one embodiment, the outer cooling gallery is sealed and filled with air, argon, helium, xenon, or carbon dioxide as a cooling media. In this embodiment, the undercrown cooling gallery is filled with air as a cooling media and includes an open inlet hole having a diameter being from 2% to 4% of an outer diameter of the piston. Alternatively, the undercrown cooling gallery is filled with air, argon, helium, xenon, or carbon dioxide as a cooling media, and the inlet hole is sealed.

A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a piston body which is made of steel. The piston body has a crown portion with an upper combustion surface, a pair of skirts which depend from the crown surface, a pair of pin bosses for receiving a wrist pin and a plurality of pin boss bridges which extend from the pin bosses to the skirts. Each of the pin boss bridges extends axially to a lower end which is opposite of the crown portion and has a rib with an increased thickness at its lower end. At least one of the pin boss bridges has a generally flat counter-bore surface for providing a reference location for machining of the piston body.

A piston and method of construction are provided. The piston includes a piston body having an upper combustion surface configured for direct exposure to combustion gases within a cylinder bore with an undercrown surface located beneath the upper combustion surface. The piston body also includes a ring belt region configured for receipt of at least one piston ring adjacent the upper combustion surface with a cooling gallery configured radially inwardly and in substantial radial alignment with the ring belt region. The piston further includes a non-stick coating material bonded to at least one of the undercrown surface and at least a portion of the cooling gallery, wherein the non-stick coating material inhibits the build-up of carbon deposits thereon.

Piston with anti-carbon deposit coating and method of construction thereof

A piston and method of construction are provided. The piston includes a piston body having an upper combustion surface configured for direct exposure to combustion gases within a cylinder bore with an undercrown surface located beneath the upper combustion surface. The piston body also includes a ring belt region configured for receipt of at least one piston ring adjacent the upper combustion surface with a cooling gallery configured radially inwardly and in substantial radial alignment with the ring belt region. The piston further includes a non-stick material contained in or bonded to at least one of the undercrown surface and at least a portion of the cooling gallery, wherein the non-stick material inhibits the build-up of carbon deposits thereon.

A piston and method is provided that inhibits the potential catastrophic damage to an internal combustion engine, thereby reducing the risk of costly damage to the engine. The piston includes a piston body having an upper combustion surface separated from an internal cooling chamber by a wall. The a pocket extends into the upper combustion surface to a closed bottom surface of the wall. A tubular member is disposed in the pocket. The tubular member extends upwardly from the upper surface. Should a valve head drop from its normal operating position, the valve head impacts the tubular member and forms a blow-by through passage extending from the upper combustion surface into the cooling chamber.

Piston with blow-by feature and method of preventing catastrophic failure to an internal combustion engine

A piston for diesel engine applications has a piston body cast entirely of one piece of steel and includes a piston head with a combustion bowl, a ring belt and an oil cooling gallery. A pair of pin bosses and a piston skirt are cast as one piece with the piston head out of the same steel material.

A piston head has a top extending radially about a first axis and first and second pin bosses depending downwardly and defining first and second pin bores. A connecting rod includes a fork having first and second connecting bosses spaced apart from each other and defining first and second connecting bores. A piston skirt extends cylindrically and includes a bridge extending diametrically through the first axis defining a skirt bore for axial alignment with said pin bores and said connecting bores. The bridge is disposed between the first and second connecting bosses, which are disposed between the pin bosses. The pin bores are axially aligned with the connecting bores and with the skirt bore. A wrist pin extends within the pin bores and the connecting bores and the skirt bore along the second axis to interconnect the piston head and the connecting rod and the piston skirt.

A wrist pin for a heavy-duty piston assembly has a body with an axis of rotation and a generally cylindrical outer surface. The outer surface is adapted for pivotal connection to both a pair of laterally spaced pin bores and a small end of a connecting rod generally between the pin bores. The outer surface has a surface roughness equal to or less than 0.10 &#x3bc;m. The outer surface has a Kurtosis value that is inversely proportional with the surface roughness such that a product of the Kurtosis value and the surface roughness is between about 0.30 &#x3bc;m to 0.60 &#x3bc;m. The outer surface has a skewness of about &#x2212;1.0 to 0.0 and a lay angle relative to the axis of about 85 to 95 degrees.

Wrist pin

A piston for diesel engines includes a piston body having a closed oil gallery and a pair of pin bosses with axially aligned pin bores. The inner faces of the pin bosses are separated from one another by an intervening space between the pin bosses for receiving the upper end of a connecting rod, which has associated outer faces adjacent the inner faces of the pin bosses. Oil passages extend from the gallery and open to the inner faces of the pin bosses for providing direct lubrication to the inner faces.
