A system that translates between Internet of Things (IoT) protocols and Internet name management protocols (domain name system&#x2014;DNS) so as to allow the secure exchange of short messages through WiFi hotspots. Applications include but are not limited to remote configuration, control, tracking, telemetry, synchronization, emergency communication. The system is operated as an independent service or is integrated into hotspot or IoT management operations for public use or private use in an enterprise or home. The widespread installed base of hotspots, standardized IoT and DNS protocols allows the IoT ecosystem as a whole to immediately reap the benefits of greater communication capabilities.

Short message service for internet devices

An architecture that can provide for improved network content filtering is described herein. In particular, access to remote resources can be controlled by a remote mechanism. In accordance therewith, a gateway can seamlessly and/or transparently redirect packets from a client that are meant for an intended destination to an access control component. The access control component can determine whether the client has access to the resources requested. In addition, the gateway can provide IPSec features on behalf to the client.

A system and method is provided for detecting, monitoring and maintaining an Internet Connection Sharing Device (ICSD). An ICSD may be connected to one or more devices, and/or applications associated with a Local Area Network (LAN), which devices, and/or applications, may attempt to detect, monitor and maintain the ICSD. Thus, a broadcast protocol for advertising status and services and a unicast request/response protocol are provided to facilitate such detection, monitoring and maintenance.

An improved network content filtering system and method utilize the network address translation functionality of a shared network connection to redirect outgoing packets from a client intended for a destination web server to an access controlling web server instead. Before a session to the destination web server is established, the access controlling web server either approves or refuses the connection, providing a content filtering mechanism. If the connection is refused, the access controlling web server may substitute other content for a filtered URL. In order to identify the client, the shared connection may additionally embed an identifier token in the redirected traffic, so as to customize the filtering action or to facilitate billing functions.

Network access control using network address translation

A domain name server assists user's in selecting desired domains in the Internet. A domain name query is sent from a resolver process, or equivalent process, when the user (or a process on the user's computer) wishes to obtain information. If the domain name exists, the domain name server provides the corresponding machine address back to the user's computer. However, when the domain name query uses a non-existent domain name then a machine address for a computer that executes a domain recommendation engine is returned instead of a machine address associated with the invalid domain. The domain recommendation engine assists the user (or process on the user's computer) in locating a desired domain name. The domain name recommendation engine can take into account numerous factors that assist in determining the intended domain, including common misspellings, phonetic errors, sub-domain errors, past statistics on website accessing by the present user and prior users. Auxiliary information is provided to the user along with information to assist in locating the intended domain. The auxiliary information can include sponsorship information, referrals, advertisements, educational or other information. The auxiliary information can be in the form of image, audio, database of other types of information.
