The present disclosure relates to a lighting device () comprising a lighting unit (), at least one application unit (), and a battery housing () comprising a first battery compartment () with a first electrical contact set () for accommodating and connecting a first battery and with a second battery compartment () with a second electrical contact set () for accommodating and connecting a second battery, wherein the first and second battery compartments are configured to force an exclusive spatial accommodation of only one of the first and second batteries in the battery housing at a given point in time. The lighting unit is electrically connected to the first electrical contact set for being powered by the first battery in a first operational mode and the application unit is electrically connected to the second electrical contact set for being powered by the second battery in a second operational mode.

The present invention relates to a Power over Ethernet system () which supports additional optical communication via optical fibres. The powered devices (d, d, d) may comprise circuitry to process optical signals, in particular triggering activation of the powered device (d, d, d) after being in a low power state. The power supplying devices (s-s) may relay optical signals via direct optical paths. Optical paths in the network may improve timing accuracy of applications. The overall power consumption of the system may be improved in particular during low activity situations in which the system is primarily used for data communication. The additional optical communication paths may provide redundant paths and thus may increase the network's robustness.

A socket () is designed to receive a plug of a pluggable device (). The socket has a detection arrangement () for detecting connection of a plug to the socket. A new session identifier is generated each time a plug is connected to the socket and it remains valid while the plug remains attached. The session identifier is preferably generated mechanically () so that it can be generated without power to the socket or to the plug. This enables detection of system tampering of a system using the sockets.

A communication system with multiple clusters connected through gateways is provided. The first cluster has a controlled device, for which an abstract representation (AR) is provided as interface on a controlling device. To facilitate an application device in the second cluster interacting with the AR the system has a near proxy in the first cluster and a far proxy in the second cluster. The application device can interact with the AR via the far proxy, which communicates with the near proxy, which in turn interacts with the AR. Results are sent back to the application device in a similar fashion.
