In one embodiment a method of implanting a prosthetic includes implanting a first member including a concave articulation surface portion defined by a first radius of curvature in a first bone, implanting in a second bone a second member including a first convex articulation surface portion defined by a second radius of curvature and a second convex articulation surface defined by a third radius of curvature, wherein the second convex articulation surface is defined by the lemon portion of a spindle torus and each of the second radius of curvature and the third radius of curvature has a length that is different from the length of the first radius of curvature by less than 0.05 millimeters and wherein the origin of the second radius of curvature is not coincident with the origin of the third radius of curvature, and bringing the first member into slidable contact with the second member.

A force dissipating impactor device comprises a bar member including a hollow shaft, a first end, and a second end. The first end of the impactor device provides an impaction surface and the opposite second end of the impactor device provides an implant engagement surface. The implant engagement surface is contoured to mate with a surface of the implant member. The impaction surface is configured to be struck with a mallet or other tool. A plurality of holes are provided in the shaft and penetrate the surface of the bar member. The plurality of holes provided on the shaft surface of the bar member may be arranged such that a line passing axially along the shaft surface intersects at least one of the plurality of holes. Further, the plurality of holes may be arranged in a staggered matrix around the shaft surface.

An instrument for recording or replicating the orientation of an adjustable component of an implant with respect to a stem portion of the implant includes a base assembly configured to clamp the stem portion of the implant in a predetermined orientation, and a fixture supported on the base assembly in a predetermined orientation with respect to the base assembly, the fixture including a locking assembly configured to be adjusted in three dimensions and locked in a configuration which angularly locks an alignment tool relative to the fixture in the three dimensions when the alignment tool is engaged with the adjustable component and the adjustable component is operably assembled with the stem portion and the stem portion is clamped by the base assembly.

A joint prosthesis device comprises a head configured to fit within a cup and in one embodiment includes a first member for attachment to a first bone in a joint and including a first articulation surface portion defined by a first radius of curvature and a second member for attachment to a second bone in the joint and including a second articulation surface portion defined by a second radius of curvature and a third articulation surface defined by a third radius of curvature, wherein each of the second radius of curvature and the third radius of curvature has a length that is different from the length of the first radius of curvature by less than 0.05 millimeters and wherein the origin of the second radius of curvature is not coincident with the origin of the third radius of curvature.

A method of assembling an implant in one embodiment includes aligning the connection features of a first implant component with the connection features of a second an implant component, placing an implant engagement surface of an impactor device and the first implant component in contact, striking an impaction surface of the impactor device, transferring force from the impaction surface to an impactor shaft, diverting the transferred force within the shaft, focusing a portion of the diverted force, and transferring the focused force from the shaft to the first implant component which brings the connection features on the first implant component into engagement with the connection features on the second implant component.

An instrument for recording and replicating the spatial orientation of a dialable component of an implant relative to a bone engaging component of the implant includes a base assembly configured to support the trial implant so that the datum is in a predetermined orientation, a fixture supported on said base assembly, said fixture including an alignment tool configured to engage the first dialable component of the trial implant when the trial implant is supported by said base assembly, and a locking assembly configured to record the angular orientation of said alignment tool relative to said fixture with said alignment tool engaged with the first dialable component, and to replicate the recorded angular orientation with the alignment tool and a second dialable component.

A trial implant system includes a stem component and an articulating component forming part of a joint of a patient. A trial mounting assembly mounts the articulating component to the stem component at variable relative angular positions. The trial mounting assembly includes an expandable ball portion and an expansion element configured to expand the ball portion upon rotation of the expansion element. In an expanded state, the ball portion contacts a cavity within the stem at three points of contact to fix the center of rotation of the ball portion at a pre-determined location within the stem. The stem cavity defines an inwardly projecting circumferential lip that bears against ball portion as it expands to ensure the three-point contact.

System and method for replicating orthopaedic implant orientation

An instrument for recording and replicating the spatial orientation of a dialable component of an implant relative to a bone engaging component of the implant includes a base assembly for supporting the bone engaging component and a fixture supported on the base assembly for supporting an alignment tool. The alignment tool is configured to engage a portion of the dialable component when the implant is supported by the base assembly. The fixture includes a locking assembly for locking the spatial position of the alignment tool relative to a pre-determined datum on a trial implant. The same instrument can be used to support a final implant and to replicate the spatial position of the alignment tool relative to the same datum on the final implant. The alignment tool can then be used to align the dialable component of the implant. The alignment tool can also constitute an impacting tool so that it can be used to impact the dialable component into locking engagement with the implant using the same instrument.

A driver has components that are easily disassembled for cleaning and/or sterilization. Once disassembled, the limited number of components allows for easy reassembly. The driver utilizes a cam that rides on spring fingers for determining the level of producible torque that the driver can produce. The cam and spring fingers are contained in a housing. Particularly, the spring fingers are part of a finger housing that is key lockable with the housing when assembled for movement as one unit. The cam is integral with a driver shaft and is received within the finger housing. The cam and driver shaft are limitedly rotatable with respect to the finger housing. The level of producible torque may be changed by providing cams and/or spring fingers of various dimensions. The driver is torque-limiting in one direction (tightening) and essentially non torque-limiting in the opposite direction (loosening). The various components are also large enough to be easily handled reducing the chance of lost components.
