Fluorene-containing polymers and compounds useful in the preparation thereof

An organic OLED having a cathode formed from a first conducting layer, an electroluminescent layer including an oxadiazole compound, and an anode constructed from a second conducting layer which is transparent to light generated by the electroluminescent layer. In one embodiment, an electron transport layer is sandwiched between the anode and electroluminescent layers. Other embodiments utilize a hole transport layer between the electroluminescent layer and the anode either with or without the electron transport layer. In one embodiment, the anode is constructed from a layer of indium tin oxide and a layer of a hole transport material that bonds to indium tin oxide and which has an energy band intermediate between that of indium tin oxide and that of the hole transport layer.

Fluorene-containing polymers and electroluminescent devices therefrom

The invention relates to 2,7-substituted-9-substituted fluorenes and 9-substituted fluorene oligomers and polymers. The fluorenes, oligomers and polymers are substituted at the 9-position with two hydrocarbyl moieties which may optionally contain one or more of sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous or silicon heteroatoms; a C ring structure formed with the 9-carbon on the fluorene ring or a C ring structure formed with the 9-carbon containing one or more heteroatoms of sulfur, nitrogen or oxygen; or a hydrocarbylidene moiety. In one embodiment, the fluorenes are substituted at the 2- and 7-positions with aryl moieties which may further be substituted with moieties which are capable of crosslinking or chain extension or a trialkylsiloxy moiety. The fluorene polymers and oligomers may be substituted at the 2- and 7&prime;-positions. The monomer units of the fluorene oligomers and polymers are bound to one another at the 2- and 7&prime;-positions. The 2,7&prime;-aryl-9-substituted fluorene oligomers and polymers may be further reacted with one another to form higher molecular weight polymers by causing the optional moieties on the terminal 2,7&prime;-aryl moieties, which are capable of crosslinking or chain extension, to undergo chain extension or crosslinking. Also disclosed are processes for preparing the disclosed compounds.

2,7-aryl-9-substituted fluorenes and 9-substituted fluorene oligomers and polymers

The device of this invention comprises a optoelectronic element, a cover, and an adhesive. The optoelectronic element comprises a substrate bearing an anode, a film comprising an optoelectronic material, and a cathode. The cover comprises a lid and a raised rim which is recessed from the outer edge of the lid. The cover contacts the element so that the film comprising the optoelectronic material is located between the substrate and the lid, and within the region defined by the raised rim. An adhesive, located in a channel defined by the bottom surface of the lid from the outer edge to the rim, the rim, and the top surface of the optoelectronic element outside of the region defined by the rim, serves to attach the cover to the optoelectronic element.

This invention relates to: (a) fluorene copolymers comprising at least 10% (by residual monomeric units) of 9-substituted and/or 9,9-disubstituted fluorene moieties and at least two other monomeric units containing delocalized p-electrons, (b) polymer blends comprising at least 10 weight % of a copolymer specified in (a), and (c) electronic devices (such as polymer light emitting diodes) containing one or more films derived from these copolymers.

A field effect transistor is made of five parts. The first part is an insulator layer, the insulator layer being an electrical insulator such as silica, the insulator layer having a first side and a second side. The second part is a gate, the gate being an electrical conductor such as silver, the gate being positioned on the first side of the insulator layer. The third part is a semiconductor layer, the semiconductor layer including a polymer, at least ten weight percent of the monomer units of the polymer being a 9-substituted fluorene unit and/or a 9,9-substituted fluorene unit, the semiconductor layer having a first side, a second side, a first end and a second end, the second side of the semiconductor layer being on the second side of the insulator layer. The fourth part is a source, the source being an electrical conductor such as silver, the source being in electrical contact with the first end of the semiconductor layer. The fifth part is a drain, the drain being an electrical conductor such as silver, the drain being in electrical contact with the second end of the semiconductor layer. A negative voltage bias applied to the gate causes the formation of a conduction channel in the semiconductor layer from the source to the drain. On the other hand, a positive bias applied to the gate causes the formation of an electron conducting channel in the semiconductor layer.
